Lumber rack as base roof rack?

Good to know. I hate rattles, they drive me insane. Is it a fully welded rack or are there some bolt on parts? Anything special in the bed that you have (i.e. sleeping platform, storage, etc with pics?) Again, awesome rig, looks sexy!

It does bolt together, 2- welded sides, bolted on front hoop, 3 - bolted cross braces, legs bolt into upper rack and box rail mounts. I also added 1" of plywood to make a platform, tire mount, water can mount, jack mount and 8x10 tarp awning.

Here is a couple of pictures of the inside of the canopy, BedRug box liner, 55 gal fuel tank, bed w/ storage drawer.

Welcome SDDiver, I'm pretty new around here too, though I've lurked awhile.

I think the idea of starting with a lumber rack is good. I had a lumber rack on my old Tundra primarily for carrying SUPs and a fishing kayak. It worked out great.

I had one of these cheapy's; about $85 off ebay, and it was more than ample for my needs. I planned to build off of it, possibly connecting the two halves and putting in some sort of storage basket or platform, but never did. I did purchase pads that protected the paddle boards a bit.

On my tundra this stuck up a bit too high for my liking so I cut it down some so the bars were just above cab height. If I had left it alone, I would have had space to mount some smaller lights under the bar.
That was with a 2002 Tundra, with a different track the rack may not be so high.

These are stronger than you would think. I had a single one mounted on my 98F150 as a headache rack. One night my sister is driving the truck and she gets rear-ended and ends up upside down. This rack stayed mostly intact and prevented any damage to the roof of the truck, possibly saving my sisters life.

It'll have some more bracing and gusseting, of course.

I've got the same Kargo master, as it was sold with my ARE top, they are heavy duty, i asked the guy how much weight it was rated for and I think it was a little north of 2k lbs. Also those little wings that the tubing attaches to off of the bed, are thicker than what the picture shows and make a great spot for beer cans =) I think it was a 1300 dollar option when I got the topper

I run a Kargo Master rack that fits over a canopy. It is great for my spare tire, jack, 4- 5 gal water jugs, lights and still lots of room for other stuff.

I'm really interested in this as well. On the K5 I would have to have something that goes around the op, so the concept would be the same.

The green truck you posted has a Can-Back topper on it. That company is going through a rough patch and is not producing any products right now.

I've thought about using one of these:

all those look like a great option. as for the camper shell does your hang over the bed rails like mine does? if you install a rack like this do you the have to cut the cab near the bed rails where the rack comes into contact with the rails?
