M116 Trailer questions

So I finally have my trailer home and working on it.

Got a few questions.

1. What rims will fit it? I have the 5 lug axle. Is is 5x 5.5? backspacing needed?

2. How do I drop the rear leg? we are going to use it for a RTT and want the leg to be functional. It will not swing down no matter what I do.

3. My pintle hook seems frozen in place, is it suppose to swivel? if so what do I need to do/ lubricate to get it to swivel.

Thanks,

Tommy

The lunette on an m116 trailer does not swivel, you can change the offset by hammering it out and rotating it 180 degrees then reattaching it. If you do remove the lunette put some grease in there to keep it from getting seized in the future. The truck it was designed for had a rotating pintle assembly for off road articulation.

Thanks guys,

So what kind of tire can I put on those rims? I don't mind running them, but what is on there is pretty rotted.

The rear leg will not come down to vertical, I can see the mount pin has a squared off side but I can't figure out how to get it to drop vertical or even get the pin out.

Can I change the Lunette out for a swivel one or am I stuck with this one? If not will it still be decent for off camber situations?

Also It has the cover and cover rails, I thought about beefing those up for a RTT mounting. I would probably cut them lower.

Anything else to look at?

Thanks,

Tommy

What year is it. Most of them are 5 on 5.5. You have the option of making adapters to make them the same bolt pattern as your current jeep or you can buy modern wheels with the original bolt pattern up to you. I have a 1943 MBT, Willys trailer I'm working on.

As far as the kick leg there should be a pin just under the tongue of the trailer to release the leg to pivot for towing or drop to support for storage. If not there is a castle nutted bolt that has three holes I'm it that you can remove the bolt and remove the pivot to clean any corrosion and re install. Is you need any parts shoot me a message I can send you a link to about 4 different suppliers.

The M116A1 trailer is a good start with a stout frame. Do you have the cover and tall bows too?
The axle can be swapped out easy to a lighter one with a matching bolt pattern to your tow vehicle.
The Lunette can be turned over but I believe it has an indexing pin so it is either high or low.

The lunette on an m116 trailer does not rotate, as the shaft is oval shaped. You may be thinking of the 1/4 ton trailers like the m100 or m416, which do have rotating lunettes.
The luntle DOES rotate, there are grease zerks for lower & upper holes for placement of the luntle
It has an adjustment at the rear of the rod, there is a crown nut holding a spring in place.
Stick a big cheater bar thru the loop and twist it.

What rear leg are you talking about?
There is a front leg under the luntle that has a bent pin that needs to be pulled out for the leg to drop down, you will need to take it all apart and grease up if its been sitting for a long time.

I do have the bows and cover, but the cover is sliced.

I am actually thinking about using the bows for a RTT, well once I do a little adjusting to them. May lower them down. Anyone been brave enough to mount a RTT to them? They seem very stout, but I was going to reenforce anyway.

So E Dr. P can I swap out the Lunette to have it rotate? if not how will it do off road? I would like a swivel lunette if possible.

I am pulling this behind an 07 Tundra so I love the size. It is a little big for my Jeep, but still doable.

Where is a good place to get a set of tires, I am stuck with these 9.00 x 16" so what is the best cost effective option?

I think I am going to take it to be blasted, what should I expect to pay?

Sorry I misread the OP and thought I had deleted my message

There is not a rotating lunette setup designed for this series trailer, but with some modifications you could add one, or a different off road hitch. You could also get or make a rotating pintle setup for your vehicle for off road articulation.

Regarding the tires, although you are pretty much stuck with the 5 lug budd wheels, you can use regular 16" truck tires on them if you use a proper sized tube.

Spend the money and get a new axle with a matching Toyota bolt pattern.
It will be lighter and easier to get parts for.

Thanks Mark,

Any suggestion on where is the best place to pick up an axle? I will measure my spring centers when I get home tonight.

Thanks mark,

Got one more resource question, where can I find the info for the swivel pintle or alternative hitches for off road?
