Making a ifting roof on a 110

Ah ok. That's a good idea. I can visualize where you're going with it. I like the idea of using stronger fabric and using it as a stress-member of sorts to keep it rigid. Clever.

Work continues inside. Got the work surface and storage box racking completed. It's very light pine so does not add a huge amount of weight, and its thick enough to be able to screw into the end wood so makes jointing it easy. As you can see it's dictated by the depth of the fridge, and that wider area provides a good spot for the gas cooker - enabling it to be sited far enough forwards (towards the middle of van) to stop steam and heat from affecting the timber surround that's covering the old cut roof edge above it.

The two larger storage boxes will be held in with a simple strap looped through a few tie-down eyes, and I've been able to fit a small pull-out shelf on heavy duty slides in the gap between the storage boxes so that we have a small table that can be pulled out when needed. I've an idea for a larger table top suitable for having meals off that will sit in front of the rack of four smaller boxes (these are situated just to the left of the two larger boxes, but low down) and be deployed as a table top, supported by the slide-out table when needed, but when sat in front of the storage boxes acts as 'door' to hold the boxes in. Might manage that tomorrow.

The small pull-out table is useful for anyone using the lock and fold/rotating seat that I have in the rear for my wee boy.

The design of worktop with the two reductions in width as you go towards the front of the van ensure maximum space in the area behind the front seats where two of us can sit. I've tucked the inverter and solar regulator at the end of the unit behind the driver, where it is well out of the way of small boy, dampness and - with a small curtain round it - prying eyes. Any devices needing to use the inverter for charging can be tucked round the corner on the shelf.

Got some more fabbing to do with the water and waste tank on the other side under the sink, and to finish the sink unit itself - some form of reinforcement at the bottom which can be used as a step to get up onto the sleeping platform would be useful - but having this other side done is a step forwards.

Fabric for elevating roof sides is ordered and should be here in the next few days.

This looks very, very Good !!

Progress on my 110 is slow due to work.

Have you noticed any problems from removing the rear bulkhead, if you don't mind me asking ?

When I removed the bulkhead I installed the MUD (UK) bulkhead strengthening bar and bolted it up tight and its not been a problem.

Thanks.

Have one of those lying around somewhere. Planned for the 90 but the 110 is priority.

Bit of a job to fit it - the grinding and bashing in a confined space is pretty full-on for what appears to be a modest 'improvement' but it does make a big difference, and is a job I'm glad I did.

You obviously have a far better way with wood than I do ! Its looking really nice , will you be sealing the pine ?

Yes it's had several coats of low VOC interior varnish, mainly because it dries quickly and doesn't make you dizzy when applying!

Bah! If you apply the good stuff on Friday afternoon there's no need for beer. :p

....in fact there's no need for a weekend!

My forays into high VOC substances inside and around the Land Rover have made me very wary. I've used Waxoyl in the chassis and bulkhead several times - leaving a persistent and noxious stink for ages. Evo-Stik glue to hold the insulation up onto the ceiling (after lesser glues failed spectacularly) nearly rendered me unconscious and meant driving with the window open for a week, and my recent experiences with Acid Etch primer and cellulose spraypaint on the roof was unpleasant.

So, water based varnish, low VOC? That'll do nicely sir. Now breathe out happily.

Hahaha! Just kidding! :) We have more than one nasty paint and stain at work, mask on. And always let it harden good before taking it out of the paint booth.

Small steps forwards. The material for the sides is now with the fabricators and they're fitting the job into their schedule. They're keen to get started as this is something different from their normal work.

So, back inside I fabricated a table-top. This will spend its day as a 'door' on the front of the set of four storage boxes, like this:

tt-5.jpg

And when required it will sit on top of the smaller slide-out table top (which is handy for snacks and drinks but not big enough to put a few plates on) transforming it into a more useful sized table .

tt-3.jpg

tt-1.jpg

The larger top has a strip of wood along its rear which jams down behind the extended small table underneath and effectively jams the sliders, preventing the slides from pushing back. The bigger top is not so big that it will 'lever' off so sits very firmly in place. You can see the underside here - quite simple:

tt-2.jpg

You'll notice in the second picture from the top that there's a gap on either side of the bigger table top when it's 'stored' - this is because it was the last piece of pine and that's how long it was! I may glue an edge on each side to allow it to fit snugly.

tt-6.jpg

Outside I've fabricated a thin steel hinged cover for the gas bottle to keep weather and sun off it, and allow a chain/padlock to go round the bottle and fasten to the lid to prevent easy thievery. Bit rough but it should do the job.
