MAN schematics/diagram

I'm hoping this is the right location for my request or inquiry. I've been lurking for a while and hoping to eventually build a rig. Would anyone happen to have, or know of the schematics or whatever it's called with dimensions for a MAN 8x8 or Tatra 815 8x8? Those are the two I've been considering, and I want to be able to do something like Google Sketchup with dimensions to get an idea of what I want. It's not something I'll be starting really soon, so there's no big rush. But I thought I'd stick my neck out and see.

Thanks to everyone for all the awesome info here!

I am guessing that you are looking for a chassis schematic so you know where to place things when you build your camper? Send an email to MAN and ask them for an up fitters guide/pdf. That should be able to get you all the info you need regarding mounting points, hook ups, dimensions, etc. Hope that helps.

P.S. An 8x8 truck? Thats going to be a monster! Can't wait to see it.

I don't know much about MAN but Tatra 8x8 can be stretched or shortened between the second and third axle to any length you wish. If you decide for Tatra, I could help you with that project.

Thanks for the tip Saiyan66, looks like I have to do a bit more research on which one I want to go for right now though. :Wow1: :coffee:

GlobalMonkey, can I PM you? Thanks for letting me know of the second option. I had dismissed Tatra's before because of lack of size.

On a T815 8x8, would it be possible to relocate the air intake more towards centerline to allow for a passthrough into the cab? I'm thinking I'd only want a 2 door as it'd be just me, and in future the wife. (At least for a while.)

Thanks for those pics T815! That gives me a bit more that I can do a 3D model off of. I guess it'd be rather difficult to get a top down view of the chassis without the cargo bed on there.

My thought is I'd want as much of the weight as low as I could, with a composite shell (hopefully carbon fiber) so there wouldn't be much weight up high. Thinking I'd drop the batteries and water tanks down into the chassis if possible, but guess I'll have to see.

Is there a way I could get the thread title changed? Now that it's opened up to including the Tatra 8x8's, the original topic isn't exactly correct.

GlobalMonkey, I was going to PM you with this next question(s), but I'll ask it in here instead. :)

I'm looking at this build less as a 'round the world' rig, and more as an RV that I can take deep into the woods for camping long term, while also being a full time house. With that said I'm thinking I'd want close to 40' total length, I can have some overhang off the back, but I wouldn't want much. How much would lengthening to say 36' from the nose to tail hurt the turn radius? And is there an 8x8x8 option for these? Or something that can get a bit more steering performance for tighter roads.

I'll have loads more questions, but those are the ones I can think of right off.
Thanks to all!

I've read of potential factory developments for 8x8x8 capabilities but never seen anything more than rumours. Perhaps people with European contacts know more. I have no idea about cost, but I did come across this Dutch company a while ago:

http://www.v-s-e.nl/products/steering/ets-trucks.html?L=1

Its ability to stand up to any significant off-roading would be questionable but the concept of aftermarket low speed contra-steering rear axles is interesting and helps reduce the turning radius significantly. There are some South African research papers on the Internet that were very interesting in this area, I'll see if I can track them down.

Do a search for the following Ph.D theses:

"The Steering Relationship Between the First and Second Axles of a 6x6 Off-Road Military Vehicle" by Carl-Johann van Eeden, University of Pretoria. There is a section which extrapolates the results to a four axle system as well.

and

"Computer-aided simulation and optimisation of road vehicle suspension systems" by A.F. Naude, University of Pretoria. This one is less related to your steering question as it covers suspension design in multi-axle vehicles, but interesting none-the-less.

They are engineering Ph.D theses so you will need to glean the pearls out of all the maths, but there is considerable interesting content in them.

T815, how difficult is it to get replacement / repair parts for the Tatras in the US?

Do you collect "donor" trucks for parts?

I believe you post quite a bit on Steel Soldiers, correct? If so I've followed you thread over the years.

Hi Joaquin, Correct I have posted on SS but far less recently because of certain hijacking of threads posting etc. Tatra spares USA, none except private parties which means T813, not T815. I will be bringing in 20' container of spares along my truck. Once I have the truck rebuilt on the road, maybe end summer 2013 ? i'll see what the response is " test the waters" as it were for other Tatra imports. I have friend in Canada who is awaiting paperwork to ship his newly acquired T815 8x8 4 dr ex mil VT model NOS 1992 with just 1200 km, he will be facing issues due to lack of use.
Buying donor trucks for spares is on my mind but have not made any commitments yet

You could relocate air cleaners, remember 815 is hyd' tilt cab, 813 bolted fixed. Here is a cab - chassis ex mil 8x8 VVN (2dr ext cab)

Been around many years on 8x8 cranes system is German and cost around $200k, with bare cab chassis 8x8x8 $500K

MAN - TATRA 8x8

Just wanted to point out a couple points MAN v TATRA

MAN Kat1 etc 4x4 - 8x8 I.m a big fan of them, however they are conventional design beam axle trailing arms coil spring on ladder frame, need 3 - point mounting system of bodies like Unimog etc
Tatra is unique with its swing axle independent suspension, backbone drive-line, triangulated to ladder / boxed frame chassis means, body structures are isolated from torsional stresses and chassis flex common in nearly all trucks besides Tatra & Pinzgauer

Final note MAN spares prices make Tatra look like VW beetle range in comparison

Joaquin and anyone else interested,

I can provide anyone with any replacement/repair parts for any Tatra. Parts are shipped directly to customer.

I can also have any Tatra build to order exactly to customers specs and shipped to North America.

I work directly with the factory and with their main "upfitter".

Cheers, Tomas

Ok I'll PM you with a small parts list and see how your price compares with my Czech supliers
