Stick shift to the 95 model year only. I've not heard of an SR with a stick. Automatic all Gen 2 years, also.

92-93 Gen 2 Monteros came in four trim levels: base, RS, LS and SR. Only base and RS could come with manual. In 94, the Montero lineup lost the base and RS trim levels.

The manual Gen 2s are pretty rare here in the states. I'd say check it out!

is/does this transmission:
a. stout
b. 6 hole round t case flange
c. good clutch
generally is it useful and adaptable to our driving styles, over a commuter driver

I previously owned a '92 RS M/T

a. - stout - yes
b. - 6 hole - NO
c. - clutch - good enough I never had an issue
d. - synchros - kinda suck if the PO didn't meticulously use GL4 and Mitsu additive. Mine sucked and tried the gamut of GL4 fluids. Kinda what you get with a 20+ year old truck.

V6 Mighy Max 4x4's have the 5 speed manual (V5MT1) transmission from 1990-94. Monteros got them earlier in the 80's. What is interesting is that there was an upgrade to the V5MT1 transmission in the mid to late 90's. One of those upgrades was improved dual cone syncros. Well worth hunting down. I found mine in a 97 Montero sport LS. Gen 1 on the left and gen 3 or so on the right.

Also you first gen Montero guys dont have to swap out your axles to 9.5" Montis to get discs. That same 97 5 speed Montero keeps your stock 9" rear and comes with discs. Keep your eyes out.

so 97 5 speed sport models will give me a bolt in limited slip 9 inch with discs. right ? that info saves me a ton of work thx.

but are sport 5 speeds as rare as gen2 5 speed?

this one i found the fellow is asking 150.00 dollars for the whole rig. no title

No limited slip 4.27 gears a day open different. I do think have the build sheets but imagine it's more rare and better all around.

You mention Mitsu additive, I was not aware of a additive for the manual trans. I was just going to swap out old oil with synthetic GL4. Do I need the additive for the Gen 1 manual?

Since reno doesn't have a Mitsu dealership with Diamond Gear oil made specifically for your syncros i would head over to Summit and pick up arguably the second best synthetic replacement, Redline MTL for colder driving or MT85. I've used others in the past and destroyed sync rose.

Also I live in Sparks too. Shoot me a PM if you want to meet up sometime.

Gen 1 & 2 manual behind V6 - yes

Thanks, I have Redline gl4 ready to put in

I had Redline GL4 + FM and also tried Pennz Syncromesh + FM in my '92 for a while, both were still very syncro grinding shifting, but found the "best" was regular dino stuff. Sta-Lube 85W90 from Napa and FM.

Friction additive for the transmission? I knew there was one for the LSD but I didn't know about the transmission.
.
My 1990 1st gen was a manual and I remember it being a bit "crunchy" when going from 1st to 2nd in the cold. Once it warmed up it was fine.

Mine is crunchy when cold as well, looks like I'm going to have to pick some up. Can you use the friction modifier for the diff? Or is this different?
