Many small solar panels vs. one larger solar panel

I've been contemplating acquiring (3) smaller solar panels vs. (1) larger solar panel for my rig.

I see advantages to each path.

  • Three smaller panels will fit into a more narrow space.
  • Severablilty. The smaller panels can move to power new independent systems and projects. (re-purposing)
  • Easier to handle and transport at roughly 9 lbs. each (25 Watt panels).

Disadvantages of smaller panels v. one larger panel.
  • More power connections
  • More bolts to secure to roof rack, etc.

Cost is about the same for each path.

Any other reasons why not to go with 3 smaller panels? I'm looking at getting (3) 25 Watt panels.

Comments welcome.

Thanks,

Multiple panels provides a level of redundancy. If one panel is damaged, you can still get by on reduced capacity. If one large panel is damaged, your charging system is probably out of commission.

I've heard panels are generally built to handle 2-3x their current rating. So when parrelleling up panels in genreal you need to take that into account. In your case if one panel shorted then there would only be 2x the current it is rated for from the other panels so you would seemingly be fine. But if you've got more panels or other current mismatches then you need to start adding inline fuses.
