Martin Canyon/Smiley Rock Trail Rehab

I have a sneaking suspicion that the FS will be overwhelmed by the large group of good folks!

I'm pretty sure the turnout will be much higher than anticipated - I've seen at least four forums with the info posted, and at least a few from each one planning to attend.

With this much volunteer help, hopefully we'll get done early and be able to spend more time at the OJ/AT open house that evening!

I've extended an invitation to the open house to the Forest Service. I'm hoping more FS personnel than just Ron are coming out!

That is a positive attitude right there :)
The sky's should be clear by the weekend with great temps for working, looking forward to a good time.

So will be making this event by shuffling things around. Girlfriends family will not be happy with me. All I have is shovel and rake.

Do you take Perkensville road in Chino to get to Smiley rock/Martin Canyon?

The roads to get to Martin Canyon are:

Turn onto East Perkinsville (County Road 70 that turns into FS-354) off Hwy 89N.

Stay on it to FS 318A, a right turn at the cattle guard onto the old narrow gage railroad bed.

Take FS-318A until you get to the APS Yavapai Sub-station – can't miss it, it's huge. Turn right onto the access road to the sub-station, go past it and up the steep hill.

The road parallels the power line. Stay on the road until it turns left into Martin Canyon, the first major dry creek bed. We'll be several miles up the canyon – I'd guess it's just over 6 miles into the stock tank we'll be rehabbing.

FYI to those planning on camping on Mingus.

Expect to find very muddy conditions on top of the mountain. We've had three days of heavy rain and high wind, so there will more than likely be trees down as well.

Good news is we're supposed to clear off and get at least one day of sun on Friday, and it will be real nice on Saturday. Expect a high in the mid 70's.

Thanks for the heads up. The RTT will make camping in the muddy conditions a little easier to deal with. Hopefully the trail from that side will not be blocked by any downed trees but if so it's just more practice for the trail clearing skills.

You can clearly see the damaged area of the tank where the illegal hill climb is.

Do you have GPS for this spot? I'd like to get an idea where it is at. I've only been on Smiley Rock twice so I'm not real familiar with the area.

Ok after reading your post #52 I now have a clue where it is at.

So how many people are actually going to this event Mark?

I wish I knew!

I know it's been posted on at least four BBS's in AZ, and since I don't subscribe to all of them, I don't know what to expect.

If we get too many, we'll make it work one way or another, perhaps by splitting the group into seperate groups to do multiple trash cleanups, and if it's too few, we'll do the best we can at the stock tank, and call it a day.

Mark, I'm sorry, but due to doctors orders and health issues I'm grounded. I'm not going to make it and I'm sad about it. Hope to see you all soon.

Hey Mark,
I just wanted to double check with you...I will be camping with the Tucson crowd off of Patato Patch Friday night, you mentioned the WAVE won't be able to make it down the trail to the worksite from there...
So my plan is to meet everyone at Safeway...but then the question is will the WAVE make it from Safeway to the worksite? Or should my Veronica & I ride with some else in the work detail?
All thoughts welcome
