MB 1017 Camper

Mike and his team at GXV are making some interesting alternatives to the "brand new" platforms currently available. I think this has a lot of merit, especially if the donor vehicle is reconditioned and has a well-documented service history. While I am not very familiar with the MB 1017, this seems like a good choice and would make the entire camper quite competitive cost-wise.

We just put together a little information on this new option:

I would be curious of other's experience with the 1017.

I thought I'd seen a build thread on here of a former Danish army MB 1017 but I can't seem to find it. Maybe I saw it somewhere else.

No mention of cruising speed and top speed on the info page. Wonder if it is geared for European truck top speeds?

MB 1017s are great trucks... I've gotten to know one pretty well since it is the oldest vehicle in my company's motorpool, a 1988 model, and had a bad history of maintenance and neglect before I moved here (typical for this country). The 1017 is a great design, very similar to the IFA W50, a great go anywhere design... solid axles and leaf springs all around, 4WD and rear diff locker. Parts availability here has not been a problem if you know the interchangeability between the MB models.

Used late-1980s models imported to here from Denmark are around $30,000 USD (like this) here. They are well maintained by that military. It would make a very capable and spacious overlanding vehicle, as shown by those in the preciously discussed links.

The only think that I don't like about it is it's size... way to big for me and the places where I like to go.
