Me and the Moonlander!

Whew! I just read the whole thread.
Impressive, and certainly inspiring. Although I haven't ridden much since the last outing we had out by your house. It's all been mostly just boring gym bikes that don't do anything exciting.

I hope to check it out at the DR...

Oh and it's been so warm you need to start getting out on the SUP for some cross training! I promise not to harass you...

Rest Day - February 23, 2012

Schoolride.jpg

Today was a rest day. My legs are sore. With that said I still got on the bike to pick up my boys from school.

Distance 2.25 miles
Elevation 156 feet
Moving Average 4.6 mph

Side Note - two photographs of my tires at 500 miles.

The rear is showing more wear and tear.

The front looks really good. When I get a chance I am going to rotate them front to back.

Oh and Thanks for all of the positive comments posted above!

Thank you for the encouragement. I have contacted the guy in the video and was not successful in getting much info on buying the parts needed to build a leg for myself, it was a few years ago and i never followed up i will try again know that you reminded me.
I have a hand-cycle but can't seem to get much enjoyment out of it, Its very scary to ride on the road being eye level with lug nuts.

I had never considered that aspect of a handcycle, it can be scary enough on a proper bicycle around cars as little attention as your average driver pays to what is going on around them, I could see it being downright terrifying being below the line of sight of many drivers

Critical Mass - San Diego - February 24, 2012

Moonlander-CriticalMass-8471.jpg

My Brother(Miles) invited me down to ride in Critical Mass. We left from his house in Bay Park and hit Tecolote Canyon on our way up to Balboa Park.

Then it was onto the University of San Diego for a quick tour around campus.

Great views.

After a quick bite to eat. We made it up to the starting point. So what is Critical Mass. It is a monthly gathering of bicyclists that take to the streets in unity to have a good time.

Moonlander-CriticalMass8-8814.jpg

For the next 2.5 hours we rode around San Diego enjoying the sites and the sounds of the city. This was my first Critical Mass and although I had some reservations at first(Simple do a google search of Critical Mass - San Diego). I had a blast and talked with all sorts of different individuals on all sorts of different bikes. Yes there are a few bad apples in the bunch but overall I love the fact that it is a free, Police escorted event that promotes bicycling.

Looks like a really fun gathering, and it appears you gave the moonlander a good bath beforehand.

Yes, I gave the Moonlander a good bath because I discovered the rear hub had some play. Took it down to the local bike store and had it tightened up. All is well now. Then on the Critical Mass ride I noticed the left pedal is starting to make some noise. I think the salt water has gotten to this pedal. I will be looking to replace it in the near future.

Franks Peak - February 26, 2012

Moonlander-FranksPeak9-9725.jpg

Dave and I took off this morning for a little tour around SEH.

The high point was Franks Peak. We then circled around the peak on fire roads back to Questhaven Road.

Keep the ride reports coming - this is my first stop every day!

Just got confirmation this morning that my Fatback is finally on it's way - can't wait to log some miles on it!

OT - my cycling shorts are thrashed and am looking into a new pair or two this spring - what brand are those that you are wearing in your last post? I usually have a ton of stuff to bring along, and it looks like the pocket arrangement on those would work out fairly well!

Justin,

Look at you! dropped a few pounds eh? Looking good man.

I'm curious to see a map showing the entire 30 days of riding. Does it look like a spider web over San Diego?

Good News on the Fatback. You are going to have fun!! The cycling shorts are made by Oakley. They are probably 7-10 years old. So I don't think the model name if there is such is going to be much help. I've been looking to pick up a second pair and have been checking out my Local Bike Stores.

Hello Ho,
Yes, I am down about 5 lbs. Here is the map of the last 30 days! Looks like there is more to explore.

La Costa Preserve - February 27, 2012

Moonlander-VistaDelMarTrail-9846.jpg

Quick ride before the rain! Rode up to the Boy Scout Kiosk, down Vista Del Mar and then around the mountain. Short but sweet.

I was working on a new camera angle for the GoPro today. Unfortunately it has too many attachment(swivel) points. It kept moving on me. I need to work on this.

Errands - February 28, 2012

Moonlander-NordahlRoad-0473.jpg

Todays ride was out thru Elfin Forest also known as the back way to Escondido. I had a few errands to run. With all of the rain it is getting pretty green. I stopped to listen to the chicken farm.

Moonlander-NordahlRoad2-0474.jpg

Time to get the spa cleaned up. All of this riding has got me spending less and trying to use more of what I already have. I picked up a new filter cartridge. As I type this the spa is being drained. Tomorrow should be a good day! I also stopped off at the local bike shop and looked at pedals. I will be upgrading soon to some new ones with cartridge bearings. The left pedal is making some noise. Bearings and salt water are not a good mix. I ran into 4wheel Parts to ask about a new driveshaft as well. Then it was back home thru San Marcos where I had lunch at Subway. Another fun day on the bike.
