Mercedes 1222 **SOLD**

Hello Expedition-Friends! We are selling our 1984 Mercedes Benz 1222 AF 4x4 family truck. Powered by the indestructable 10.9l (670 cubic inch) OM 421 diesel engine and geared with a 5-speed manual transmission with dual range four-wheel drive, makes the 1222 a capable expedition-overland truck. A considerable amount of money has been spent on the custom aluminum flatbed with folding sides, side step platforms,custom super-single 22.5" 10-lug wheels mounted to the on/off-road 445/65 Hankook Smart AM15 rubbers, powder coating, paint etc. The 10 passenger cabin (large enough for a queen bed) is outfitted with a Eberspacher Aux-heater that can heat the cabin in freezing temperatures without the engine running. 12V and 24V trailer plugs are installed. The very low mileage (not unusual for fire trucks from Germany) can be verified by the Service booklet. There are two air-ride seats (driver and passenger) in the front with a third seat (removable jump-seat) which is usually occupied by our baby-girl and her car-seat, but big and comfortable enough for an adult. The tilting cab unveils an absolutely clean engine, with no leaks or drips anywhere. All fluids are freshly serviced, and the tires have less than 1000 miles on it. It has pneumatically-actuated snow chains and several air-ports for filling tires or connecting air-tools. Everything on this truck is in perfect working order. Included in the sale are the quite hard to find and costly maintenance manuals, the operating manual and some spare parts and filters. Oh my - I am pretty sure of the flatbed is 12' x 9' but to be a 100% sure I will have to measure it when I get home. It is big enough to house our 12' Aliner popup camper. I am gonna have to dig in the manual to get the exact weight with the flatbed, but it got considerably lighter after
removing the fire department steel-box, pump, accessories etc.

Explain highway capable, a lot of the USA is 80mph now, is 80 mph + an achievable cruising speed?

There are currently 8 states that have "portions" of their interstate system allowing 80mph and 70mph for heavy vehicles. The rest is 70-65mph or less. This 1222 can cruise at almost 70mph which is plenty fast for a vehicle this size. Definitely the wrong truck though if you are panning on commuting between Seattle and New York on a regular bases.

I get that, reality is that even in 70 mph posted states, 80mph + is the norm for interstate highway cruising. Just returned from a 1,100 mile north south trip to/from Florida in the 70mph zone of states, my cruise control was set at +10 and I was in the slow lane.

That is what we did. We have a pop up trailer that fits on the back, but there is enough room for many different set-ups (tents, truck campers, expedition boxes, shelters etc.) The bed has L-tracks all around the sidewalls and floor. I fly airplanes for living.

Ahh, very cool. Always love to hear what people do that allows them to work abroad! Best of luck with the sale, somebody will have a very cool rig.
