Howdy. I think you have to find someone with access to the EPC and they can enter the VIN.
what kind of truck is it?

I've been doing that and it's a bit of a drag. Looking at a lot of SK/AK trucks the last six months. Do those EPC CDs on ebay provide anything?

I use this, the link will probably leas you to my vehicle, but use the back-links at the too.
I think these show all specs and parts. Which doesn't tell me what axle ratios that a certain truck was built with. This site shows an automatic for a truck that is a manual.
The experts are able to get this data somehow. I think they have EPC access.

Correction: not possible to enter VIN.
However, for example in my case, once I selected the correct model (405.230 = U500, North America homologation), and the correct engine designation ((906.912), when I then went to “engine electrics”, then “alternator” (or “generator”), it correctly gave me 2 choices: 145a and 270a versions.
At that point I had to actually remember (or look on my original build sheet that came with the vehicle) that I had the 270a version, to get the correct part number. Just an example, since I replaced it with a Delco 28si years ago.
