Mercedes Zetros Expedition build

Guys, girls and friends to be.

5 years ago I got on board with the expedition scene. Life changes bought me to buying a truck for living and travelling in.

So I ended up buying a few trucks over the years with great plans for each one of them but ended up selling for various reasons.

I started with a 2001 atego 1823ak then moved onto a 2005 814 lwb mercedes vario to which I converted to 4x4.
I didn't even up finishing the 814 off as I got offered a price I couldn't turn down.

Moved onto a 2013 MAN Hx60 4x4 8,000miles but after some real long thinking I decided this wasn't going to work either.

The good thing is I made a great amount of cash on every one of them to move onto buying a Mercedes zetros 2733 6x6.

A Zetros was a pipeline dream 5 years back but as of September 2021 I now own one with the help of all the other truck sales that I had done.

So I'm starting a post with my build to share and gather information from all those who can help if I get stuck but also for myself to help in some of the communities.

So the Zetros is year 2015 6x6 covered only 40,000miles. Its the manual 8 speed with crawler gear.
Its a ex gritter but I can say its never seen grit in it.
The gritter box still has the stickers on the conveyor belts and the paint inside the box has not one mark on it.
The only thing I can think of is its had a brand new unit on it or it was only used as a plough behind a gritting truck.
Either way I'm not fussed as it needs a complete sand blast and chassis re-paint.

I have started stripping the truck back in some spare time getting it ready for the blast.

So in short even though its long ? I'm Jon and I look forward to speaking to those who will take a interest and those I can also help out.

I plan to build the truck over the next 2 to 3 years.

Thanks in advance ✌

I have started stripping the chassis and prepping it for sand blasting.

I am removing everything away from the inner chassis rails so full access is gained when sand blasting.

The diesel tank will be the last thing to move so its not immobile

It looks far worse then it does with the naked eye.
There is next to nothing from the diesel tank forward

Hello! That's a beast!! It makes me smile, because years ago I bought an ex gritter too... It was a Magirus Deutz 310 6x6 and although a lot older had a similar stance! I too sand blasted the chassis with the intention of building an overlander, but at the age of 22 the funds were not there so it went (at a profit too!). However, one thing I learnt was that I didn't cover enough of the vital stuff when I blasted it. I had pin prick holes in many of the air lines, so here's a very valid tip... Spend lots of time covering ALL the air lines well, or remove them! Good luck!!

Hi, Jon:

Congratulations for the Zetros. It is indeed a great finding, no matter how ugly it looks.

Here are my two cents, very, very humble: STRIP IT ALL BEFORE SAND-BLASTING!!! REMOVE EVERYTHING THAT CAN BE UNBOLTED OR TAKEN OUT!!!!!

Hope it helps.

Greetings and good work.

Update

So after many weeks of hard work its finally sand blasted and painted

I stripped it to its chassis prior to sandblast

I'm really happy with the outcome

REAR BRAKES....

I always had the intention of changing out the rear brakes but I got to be honest I never thought they were going to be this bad.

Once I cut the rear drums off due to them being completely welded stuck on due to corrosion, this is when I realised how bad they were.

I have spent over £6,000 (British pounds) on both rear axel brakes.
There is not one component that I have not bought.

I parted my money with buying all branded parts. Majority of this came from Europe.
As for all the bolts and components I couldn't buy I used a Mercedes Specialist main dealer here in the UK.

Yes its cost me a small fortune to buy but I was peace of mind that in the future the likelihood of me ever changing it again are slim apart from wear and tear.

Take a peek and see how bad they were

AIR TANKS

There was only two air tanks that I deemed unfit for use.

This was the typical corrosion around the straps that hold them.

After obtaining a quote for £550 for all of them this was a no-brainer so ordered them all.

REAR PARABOLIC SPRING

One of the rear springs were broken so this had to be ordered direct from Mercedes-Benz specialist dealership in Germany

This alone was £1200

I ordered new u-bolts, bushes and spring carrier bolts too at the cost of £300
