$1200 sounds like a smokin' deal.

We recently started using a Diahatsu Hi-Jet around the ranch, and with 4-low and the diff lock, it does all right. It gets hung up on every pebble, however, due to low low ground clearance. Biggest drawback for me, by a long shot, is the lack of clearance.

I understand its an easy job to lift them 2" or so, then put somewhat larger tires on them. I rode in one with larger tires and they rubbed.

They are remarkably stable, much more so than you'd think.

I view the micro trucks in the same league as scooters - fine for around town, but not something for a long trip. They're not street legal in most states anyways. I think the only places that allow them are the same that allow golf carts and utvs to be licensed, as none of them are USDOT approved.

How cool is that? Although since like you mention they are not street legal, I'm not sure what their utility is. Maybe it's the 21st century self-propelled cowboy and shepherd wagon.

I almost bought one until a friend pointed me to a Samurai. Street legal, similar dimensions, just 500lbs heavier, but more displacement.

....unless you're in a developing country or a country that allows them. Micro trucks are popular in China and Mongolia. The micro trucks are so popular in those countries that one can park their micro truck in almost any small spot including parking on the sidewalk!

I second Peter's recommendation. The Steyr-Puch Haflinger is a great offroad vehicle. The problem is that it is only capable of about 45 m.p.h. due to a governor--if that is removed it can be made to go quite a bit faster, but I wouldn't consider it very safe at much higher speeds. It can go just about anywhere and if I recall, it has an maximum altitude record. With portal axles it has remarkable ground clearance for its size. It is also street legal!

Cheers,
Greg

I have one, It is great for around the place and ranch. It is not street legal due to emissions and safety issues I am told. I have made a few trips down the roads with the slow moving vehicle sign. Agree that they need some work to make them work well off road. I have a 2" lift and some ATV tires. Also T1 skid pans. I mostly use it as my snow plow. Works great and the heated cab is handy. It gets around very well. It would get old on a very long trip as the ride is a bit harsh.

I think those Micro_trucks are neat. Maybe not practical here in the states with having trouble getting them on the street but... I think they're so cool.
That FWC over cab model looks SWEET!!! I Love it. I say for 1200bux you could tow it out with something else and then just travel off-road in it. Hell you could probably tow it behind a Subi Wagon or something. Does anyone know if they can be flat towed??? Mybe a 4wheel locking manua; locking hub set up for flat towing or just a front wheel Dolly...

I like this Daihatsu Mud Master concept:

Not 100% sure why the renderings have smooth tires :)

I LOVE that concept... The olther pictures out there show a mobile bike work station and lots of possibility for more uses. Such a neat rig. Reminds me of a mini Mitsu-Van... Saw alot of those in Australia and they were sure neat. Also seen an old Toyota Van run the Tillamook State Forrest trails here in Oregon WOW is all I can say, made me feel like I had too much truck and more then a bit humble eh ;)

Cheers

well the reason i brought it up is because we dont have emissions here, and our local goverment will slap a regesterd sticker on just about anything but po go sticks, and if it doesnt have the power i can always modify it to take a b16-a2 or b18 honda motor from a civic, i think itd be pretty cool for a weekend trip to the beach or lake, sleep in a tent but for the price and gas miliage you cant beat it
