Microsoft gps

I have been lurking on the site for a while now and I have a few questions about navigation. I was given a copy of microsoft streets and trips, and the included GPS unit. It is the the first mapping program I have used while rolling. I have down loaded a copy of Ozi. Wow there is a lot to it. When I tried to configer the GPS, they wanted a brand name of the unit. Isn't a GPS signal "generic" ? I though you give Ozi your current lat and lon and it did the rest. Can my microsoft GPS be used with Ozi, National Geographic, or any other topo based mapping program? Thanks

Try setting the GPS Make in Ozi to "NMEA only", that's your 'generic GPS signal'. Ozi wants to know the Make of the GPS so it can take advantage of make/model specific features. For up/downloading of tracks and waypoints it needs to know the right protocol.

You are getting right into it. Once you got your position mapped and know where you are:sombrero: tell us more about where you explore and what you drive.

Thanks for the info. I live in Ohio, so there aren't alot of wide open places to explore. I have a 95 yj thats set up nicely for trail riding; 4" lift, 33tsl's, ARB's, winch. I built the the jeep to be versitile. I carry more expedition type gear than most jeeps in my club. I keep a hi lift, with a jack mate,and all the hi lift accesories, a max ax, a pull pall, a winch accesory kit, a power tank, a large tool kit, and a lot of spares. My other rig is a 04 fr 350 4x4 cc lb srw psd. It carrys a 8 ' hardside truck camper. I feel less than comfortable with the length, height, and weight of the truck/camper on any thing smaller than a national forest size road. I basically flat tow the jeep if I am going far, and use the truck as a base camp. From there a spike camp out of the jeep. My main need is in navigation. Our jeep club went to Harlan county Ky. last year and was wandering around lost for hours. I am really good at following the jeep in front of me. After that things get alittle shakey

I have the MS GPS but have not tried it with Ozi. I'll give it a try and let you know how it works out.
