Might Have Found It! Opinions??? Advice???

So I might have found the combo that I was asking about in another thread.

This might fit in my garage! And keep my HOA happy!

It isn't exactly what I was originally looking for***(see link at bottom of page) but the ability to park this at my home may trump other considerations.

So, your questions and opinions, please:

Price: according to car driver, the national MSRP for this is just under $35,000. The loan peak V1 shell looks like it lists at about $5k - $6k and that puts the combined base price, new at about $41K. There are a couple mods, but adding them to the depreciated basis makes the price of $39K seem high.

So what's your opinion about price?

The only recalls and/or problems I've found on this year SR models involve a problem with the axle, and the brakes, and the screen of the info center.

If any of you guys have a '22 model, can you tell me whether you've had problems with the brakes or the info center? In general, is 2022 a good year/bad year for this model? I'm not a Toyota guy so I'm not knowable about the Tacomas, but I do remember reading something about the frames on some of these being a problem and I can't remember what years that was. 🤔

How about your experiences with a loan peak, pop-up wedge Camper Shell?

I will probably have a few more questions once I dig deeper, but again any advice, or opinions, whether usable, helpful, sarcastic, or just silly, or even insulting, would be appreciated😆

I was intrigued with the Lone Peak, but decided against it because of the need to break camp whenever you wanted to go somewhere. I do like to explore once camp is established. No other complaints. If you think that would work for you, go for it!

For me, a good quality tent might have been a solution.

Over the decades have had and enjoyed two Tacomas. Both were reliable and capable light/medium duty trucks. A wedge topper fits these trucks well. Folks do a wide range of outfitting to meet their needs. The many threads here on EP just prove the concept.

I almost went with this approach when I fully retired…but decided to go full size. But it was a close call.

I am a huge Tacoma guy, so I will share my thoughts:

1) Price is too high IMO. The SR package is basically bottom of the barrel. Not worth owning for a camping truck IMO. Maybe for 30-32k, but still I would personally pass. TRD Offroad model or bust.
2) The 5 ft bed is a weakness. I have been critical of the LP wedge design since it was first posted on here. I am a practicing structural engineer and I find its construction and design to be very lackluster, and I am not confident in its long term functionality in the slightest. That massive overhang will be a problem for sure. The loss of 1 ft of bed space (when compared to a 6 ft bed) is also a bummer.
3) In order for the Tacoma to fulfill your needs I am betting that it will need some upgrades, mainly suspension. I likely went over the top compared to most, but I am expecting a lot out of this truck (Pan-American and Africa circumnavigation), so I left almost no stone unturned.
4) The '22 MY is totally fine. I have a '21 and it is rock solid.

Happy to answer more questions if you have them.

To clarify for OP, the base model will come with open front/rear diffs, no fancy traction control modes, etc. I believe it does still come with Toyota's standard ATRAC mode. But other than that I don't think there's a whole lot of a difference. I got a TRD-offroad model 4Runner because it came with a rear e-locker and pleather (easier to clean), otherwise I'd have just gone for a base model. I can't speak to the price though.
