Miles-too high to buy?

that's funny..i have seen that one posted too...i don't want one with that many miles...however, it sounds like people aren't too concerned with miles if it is well taken care of...good luck with your search...

i am not too worried about miles...it will be the third car and will be used for camping/exploration trips in the Utah desert and surrounding moutains...probably will only see 8,000 miles or so a year...

The design life of an LC-specific engine is ~300k in bush conditions. Clearly US highway miles count less. Since the 2UZ is not LC-specific, I don't know what the design specs are. No doubt in my mind whatsoever that 300-400k is perfectly expected, just don't know what the rebuild schedule is on them? How much block wall & head milling &c

All that said, the 2UZ burns less oil at any given mileage than a 1FZ, and the oil stays honey clear through its use cycle. Top notch.

Toyotas generally bottom out at some point and the amount of miles doesn't seem to matter. An 80 typically bottoms out around 4k. No matter how many miles it has as long as it is running and isn't completely trashed the owner can expect to get 4k for it. Look at the mid 90s 4runners they've bottomed out failry high. Rarely do I see one for sale for less than 4500 no matter how many miles on them. I think 8k is where the 98/99s have hit a bottom for now. I expect in a few more years it will be in the 4-6k and then after that I would expect that to be about it. This isn't only true for Toyota 4x4s. Look at Camrys. I've seen 300+k Camrys from the late 80s with asking prices of 2500-3500. There aren't too many sub 2000 Toyotas of any vintage. The old 70s Hi Luxes still bring 15-2400 around here.

I am doing the same sort of looking... I have found many in the 100-130K range, and they all seem to be rock solid. From the research that I have done on forums and speaking with owners, it seems like a pretty safe bet so long as the LC has been taken care of. I say go for it! You had better get to the good ones here in the west before I do! :sombrero:

Good luck with your search! Prices seem to be all over the place...

Yea I know what you mean. Unfortunate for those of us who hunt for a great deal, there seems to be lots of people out there that will just pay anything for a 100, and is screwing everything up. There have already been two that I did not act fast enough on and they were gone in a matter of days.

If I might chime in, but realize that prices across the board have dropped significantly on all SUVs. The Hundy is a recent über-high-quality machine that IMO is priced below value right now. Additionally, dozens and dozens of AZ machines are purchased by out of state buyers, most trade-ins last a few days before auction due to demand. It is nearly impossible to find a Hundy in the Southwest US, I noticed very high $ stuff.
