The military rates these trucks at 2 ½ ton off road and 5 ton on road. They are designed for off road use and are very tough. I removed one of the rear axles and put a set of front springs under the remaining rear axle, making a 4x4. This truck has 15,500 original miles and 1300 hours. The engine is a 140hp turbo Hercules diesel/multifuel taken from a 1983 truck with only 8500 miles, and has none of the valve clatter common on the Whites. I repainted with military polyurethane 5 years ago. There is no rust. I assembled the truck as a keeper, installing lockout front hubs, air-o-matic power steering, front pto winch, air shift transfer case, cab heater, ni-cad batteries, 11:00x 20 tires, dual fuel tanks. I built the camper box on back from square tube steel, with a ¼” plywood skin with a few spots delaminating. There is no interior in the camper box.
Parts are readily available and inexpensive. The truck comes with a supply of filters and various other parts. This workhorse will take you to the farthest reaches and get you back again. It gets about 11 mpg unloaded at 55 mph.
Located in the SF Bay Area, formerly SE Alaska. Pictures on request
