Military Surplus Trailers in Seattle Tacoma area?

Hey everyone,

I need a little utility trailer for my Jeep to haul rocks, wood, and other crap we need around our mini farm. I was thinking a military surplus trailer would be perfect, and maybe better than building up your average landscape trailer to deal with the roads around here.

I go over to the Seattle area all the time and figure there has got to be a place somewhere around the joint base Lewis/Mchord that sells surplus military vehicles but can not find anything on line.

If anyone has one for sale, or know where I can get one, let me know. I am flexible on the size and type. I will be hauling mostly landscape and garden crap. I have seen some that dump, and that would be a big plus.

I frequent www.govliquidation.com quite often, and have purchased several different items, though, never a trailer.

Looking at the many different trailers every week, looks like you could get a good one for under 500 bucks. Military tough! Not a bad deal.

Good luck!

Looks like I will be going down to Tacoma to check out a trailer. They have a ton more of these. I am inclined to go for the M101 over the M105. I am going to use it for garden and landscaping. I have an off road worthy camper already that can haul 4 dirt bikes, or two street bike and one dirt bike in it. It is too nice inside to haul materials, especially used ones.

Any advice on these things? I plan to do down there in a week and see what one looks like it will be towable with out repair for about 60 miles. If I can get it up I5 to my inlaws I can do light repairs to get it safe to haul over the pass to Chelan (another 125 miles)

I figure I will get one of those magnet mounted temporary light sets from NAPA so I can just plug them in and go. When I go to check them out I can see if the wheel bearing and tires will make it up I-5.
I guess if I had to I could rent a U-haul flat trailer one way and just not risk it, but I am on a pretty tight budget right now.

Just realized that I can't link directly to the M101. If you want to see what I am looking at, go to the site, select Washington as the State, and type in Trailer as the Key word. There is about 10 different one. Some M105 and some M101. The starting bid is around $150.00 each and they have went through a few auction cycles with no bids.

Hey, and if your going to bid, put the auction number here so we don't bid against each other. If anyone wants me to check one out for them while I am there, let me know.

Searching on Craigslist for someone else's junk is always an option, but then, why spend 500-1000 dollars on something that you could get from military surplus for 200-400?

I've purchased several items from www.govliquidation.com and have been extremely pleased every time. Make no mistake, the military does NOT use low quality stuff. They use and abuse it, and then sell it to us, but that's the way it goes.

The 3/4 ton trailers seem to be much more popular in this area, and it seems as though they would be a little more manageable...
However, the 1.5 ton trailers are bigger, badder, meaner, and more versatile if you're using it for hauling "stuff".

In my opinion, these trailers are a pretty amazing deal. If I wasn't already BUILDING my trailer, I would get one for myself. The guy I sit next to at work is looking at them as well. Looks like popularity is rising!

Also note, the trailers from the military are designed for military use. The M416weighs in near 650# empty, the M101 (versions) weigh in at 1275# empty and the 1.5 ton M105 weighs in at 2750#s.

I just bought an M105A2 for my UNIMOG, while I'm tickled pink with it, I don't think you would be pulling it with a Jeep. I'd go 101 for sure.

now THAT is pimp! What a freak'n cool Unimog! And, the trailer really fits. I think it needs big military tires to lift it to the proper height, but other than that, I love it. Nicely done! :victory:

I just bought an M101A1 and it tows very well behind my LR3. I am refinishing the wood.It had the bows, canvas. Once the bearings or tires need to be replaced, I will replace the who axel unit with electric brake 3500# axel with standard wheels. This will reduce the weight by a few hundred pounds at least. I do like the hand brakes though. Just remember that 400$ at auction requires a 10% buyers fee. Military title app, and registration in washington plus sales tax, plates, and washington title.

I have a buddy who just purchased an M105A2 for under 300 off the GovLiquidation website! He says that it's a beast, but will certainly handle the yard waste, bark, crushed rock, and other various items that he'll carry with it.

The only downside to his experience was that he had to wait a MONTH after his purchase to be able to pick it up. The paperwork that the military requires is a bit insane. Background check and all for a used trailer seems unnecessary.

Now that he has it though, he says it was worth it.

You will have a tough time finding a M416 from GL so craisglist is your best option there. If you want to get a M101 try to get the A2 or A3 version as its has a better braking system over the A1. The M105 is a beast and needs a big strong vehicle to pull it much less the load it might be carrying.
