It would be nice to just leave it all behind but unfortunately I cannot do that. I need to be able to work and I am fortunate that I can work from just about anywhere as long as I have a decent internet connection.

Anyone set up their expedition rig for working?

I do it on a limited basis. I charge everything before I leave then plan stops to do all of my internet stuff quick and efficiently. Pre plan as much as you can and do absolutely everything you can before you leave. Don't leave saying that you will write that email or turn in that report from the road. Do it before you go even if it holds you up. Let your back up people understand you are on the road and that you need and appreciate any backing they can give. I also keep my laptop next to me so in the event I get a text or call that something is needed I can stop for just a moment and knock it out. Letting it pile up and having it hang over my head spoils the trip so I just stay caught up and do the work as soon as it comes in.

Unfortunately my business doesn't work that way. I get orders throughout the day and then I need to do the research, compile the report, and return the report withing 24hrs most of the time. Sometimes I only have an 8 hour turn-around time.

I need an extremely compact scanner as some of what I have to include in my reports must be handwritten.

One thing I began using recently are some apps for my iPhone that act like a scanner. They use the camera to photograph the document then will convert it to a PDF. The apps allow multiple pages to be made into the same PDF as well. Some are free, some are not. I use one called Genius Scan. It allows editing of the initial image (crop) and will also auto-enhance the image, which isn't always beneficial. And they are also available for android devices too,

I started off with the free version but later purchased the other one. Honestly, I don't recall what the difference was between the two.

I did some checking. The paid version has no ads and allows uploads to Box, Dropbox, Evernote, Expensify, and Google Drive.

Edited again to add:
If you have an iPhone, this weeks free app in the app store is Scanner Pro by Readdle, FYI.

I downloaded both of those apps. It never occurred to me to scan docs with my iphone or ipad. Worked great.

Thanks

Are you usually within cell phone-ish signal? A cell booster may work well, and would provide voice and data service. Wilson makes well reviewed ones.

There is sat internet, but its SLOW and expensive.

On a side note, I sure do wish I could work from the road..... Sounds nice.

I just got the Wilson Mobile Pro. I hope it gives me a little more coverage when I'm out in the desert. Maybe I will charge the other photographers for phone calls in the boonies. It will pay for itself in no time!
