We just got back from a New Years trip to Mojave National Preserve and surrounding areas. It was a great 4 days away. Our goal was to get used to the new Horizon setup. Good to meet Dan and Julie (Swagdan) from the Expo here. Glad you guys made the trip.

Trip report here: http://www.adventureduo.com/2008/01/new-years-in-mojave-desert.html

Why do you guys look so cold? Isn't the Mojave a desert in southern California?

The new trailer with your 80 looks boss Dave. Phenominal build -

I'll bite, what is that?

Desert Megaphone. It's in the middle of no where. Nobody knows how it got there and nobody knows when it was put there or by who. Rumor has it ... there's a fellow that comes out there and puts leather skins over each end and plays it like a drum. Then he records the sounds it makes. Supposedly you can find his music on the internet somewhere and download it.

Kcowyo, yeah it's socal.. but it was freezing. Literally. About 32 - 35 degrees. Oh yeah and windy certain days which made it worse. Thanks for the compliment... made life so much easier!! Didn't have to barely touch the cruiser or try to put a cover on a tent thats 6+ feet up in the air!

That there megaphone is fer riding!!!! (pic please)

It's also a fairly bizarre art piece in a random weird spot. Cool place to go check out.... good for scratching your head and wondering "what in the god's name.... who in there right mind.... wonder what inspired that....what's it for.... does it have a purpose... what are you supposed to do with it.... " and other questions that pop into your mind while admiring it from up close or from afar.

That is neat:) I thought it was some kind of super spotting scope. It wouldn't last until the cement set up here. Somebody would take it for scrap.

It's mounted pretty darn good and you have to hike up a ways, so, I'm pretty sure the tweakers aren't going to nab it for scrap anytime soon. Thing must weight close to 1,000 lbs (without me on top). Looks to me like a couple of old train tranny housings welded together - but then again, I've never actually seen a train transmission, so what do I know.

I hollered through it, being it is the "Desert Megaphone" and all... Couple of drinking yahoolies (read: Drunk Baja Bug women) off in the distance hooted back at us. Apparently it does work as a "megaphone" however it's the age old question: If you holler through the desert megaphone and no one is around to hear it, is it really a megaphone at all? Thankfully the drunk baja bug girls were there to hear and because of that, I can confirm that it is indeed a "desert megaphone". It appears to be one of those wireless type megaphones at that! :wings:

That thing is cool - thanks Dave for posting photos

No problem man. This thing has intrigued me for sometime ... we blew right past it one time, didn't even know it was there. Apparently many don't.

Can we edit the thread title and call it Desert Megaphone or something? I will create another thread with our trip report and pics instead.

here's another view of it..

If anyone wants the general GPS coordinate for it, let me know.
