Montero Alarm system removal, Gen 2.5

Your lock jumping is probably due to failing components inside the door lock actuator module.
I will look into that, thank you. Most of my issues with the locks went away after taking out the alarm, but it still re-locks the car when pressing unlock on the door control for too long.

Hi all, looking for a second opinion here.

I have a 99 Montero that was built in Puerto Rico -- it's the Dakar Edition. It has the 3.0 v6, so same engine as the 95-97 LS in the US, but some of the electronics are similar to the '99 US models.

The battery died on me last week, and I needed to get a jump. After that, as I drove to the shop to get a new battery, I noticed some clicking sounds behind the center dash, almost like a turn signal sound and cadence. With the new battery installed, I turned the key and the starter cranks, but the engine doesn't catch/start. Also, when I unlock the car/try to start it, the clicking sound behind the dash begins, and then after about 60 seconds, the doors will lock themselves. The LED light/switch is flashing but pushed all the way in and probably broken there. Finally, I couldn't get two different OBD readers to connect that have worked before. Checked the power and ground there with a multimeter and it showed 12v.

I am thinking that it is the anti-theft system, but the only weird thing here is that the starter will turn (as I understand it, the anti-theft system is supposed to inhibit the starter). Maybe different because it was sold in Puerto Rico?

Had it towed to a shop, where they diagnosed it as needing a new starter, which I am leery of considering the other electrical problems.

Any insights would be much appreciated, thanks.

It’s been a while, but if your alarm horn has the wires cut (they probably are cut), when the alarm is going off, you may hear a relay click in time with the lights flashing. Have you ever messed around with this in the dark, you’ll see the lights flashing. I agree, don’t service the starter until you solve the alarm issue. Mine is still on the original starter at 235k . I do not know if the anti theft would disable the starter relay or only the ignition system. I’d guess the later. The alarm has a sensitivity dial on it. You need to locate your anti theft box up under the dash first. The bypass / disable trick is easy to do.

Thanks for the response!

I pulled the dash panels off and, unsurprisingly, did not find the anti-theft system box that is referenced above. However, there is this relay coming off the ignition wires (hanging, attached via that red thing on the ignition switch side and then the effectively splitting the black wire on the L side)? Anyone have an idea what it’s there for?

Do you have keyless entry on it? One challenge you will face is that I’m pretty sure the alarms were installed stateside, not by Mitsu in Japan, and I’ve heard that there were several different types used at the same time.

I have never had a remote for it during my ownership (~2.5 years). Never had a problem with it until this jump.

Mitsubishi Montero Gen 2.5 Alarm System Removal con't.

Pulled out all other wires from alarm system to vehicle wiring harness connector.
Connected starter interrupt wires with a butt connector.
FYI, this would be an ideal place to wire in a kill switch.

Taped wires down so they won't be floppy.

That's it. No more alarm.

Hope this helps someone.
Will this work for the 1999 Montero Sport

For future readers of this post, on the off-chance you make it all the way to this comment, please note that there is another guide in the Mitsubishi Monteros USA / SoCal group that is a great cross reference for this guide. On US trucks, the original factory wiring harnesses should still be there and you shouldn't have to cut and reconnect any wires. Some cutting, but you can just reconnect the factory harnesses to each other after taking out the alarm bypass. I am also adding in that on my 97 Montero LS, I had an extra set of two wires running into the side covers near the wiring harnesses. On the legend which was printed on the alarm module box it said these were "courtesy light" & ground which the very good fellows at Ozzy's determined to most likely be the trigger for the alarm when the door was opened without disarming it. They were cut and everything worked fine afterwards. The keyless entry function no longer works on mine, however some other trucks may have a separate keyless entry module. Alternate aftermarket keyless entry systems are available. I also am having great results so far from removing the system, my starting issues went away and the locks no longer jump.
Are you referring to the Facebook group or a group on Expedition Portal?

How do I bypass? I removed the security module but, it has three plugs dangling now.
