Montero Gen2.5/Gen3 parts and accessories from Philippines

Hey guys,

I've decided that I would like to get a Gen 2.5 or Gen 3 for an Overland rig. I'm finding that there are bolt on goodies that the rest of the world enjoys, that aren't readily available here in the States. I'll be going to the Philippines on a scuba diving trip in April/May and was thinking of checking out parts and accessories that are available over there. The Pajero is a very popular vehicle there along with the Land Cruisers.

If there were some unobtanium (at least for us here stateside) items that I could grab while over there, what would you suggest? I was thinking Pajero badges but not sure if putting them on a Montero here would mark me as a poser (hahaha). I believe most Pajero's over there are the diesel versions, so there probably won't be much in the engine mod department.

I would love to get a Jaos front and rear bumper but that would cost way too much to bring back, so I guess I'm limited to items that could fit in standard luggage. Although I could entertain checking in larger items as oversized.

Suggestions?

Will have to look. Maybe I can try and reach out to a Pajero club out there.

I wonder what it would cost to just have one shipped stateside?

I never got around to checking ebay. Would it be worth it to just order there from their international sellers or does shipping normally kill the deal?

Just bought two items from the eBay seller (see pics). I had been following this guy forever but he always trying to charge
arms and legs for shipping from Malaysia.

As I'm typing this, it's free shipping... So you guys might take this opportunity while it's free!

Gen 2 and Gen 2.5 stuff is not so common in Thailand. I go there roughly 4 times per year for work for the past 6 years and can find time to search junk yards on occasion. Gen 1 items seam a little more available - but they are getting old now so not too common either.

Montero Sport (Pajero Sport) and Triton items are COMMON there being they are locally built. Diesel parts !

Or there may be at least one forum member hanging out in the Philippines. :ylsmoke:

Sourcing anything here, even if it's common, can be frustrating. Stuff is spread out, poorly catologed, often in not as good a shape as initially described due to the climate, etc. There's a lot of cheap CHinese crap floating around too.

Where are you visiting? If you get a list together of exactly what you want I may be able to help you. The mechanic my roommates use is really resourceful and good with all things 4wd. His primary love is Toyotas but he works on everything.

Other roommate has a 1st gen hi-top (can't recall the year and it's not here at the moment).

Robert, thanks for taking the time to reply.

I'll be hitting Manila sometime in the last 2 weeks of April and then probably heading straight to Batangas. I'll probably be back in Manila after a week and may have time for part hunting. You mentioned that stuff is either hard to get or cheaply made. If that's the case then I won't bother...hahah...I'd rather explore more of the country than go digging around in Banawe (btw is that still a legit place to get stuff?)

That is one clean looking Evo.

Well it's not so much that the parts aren't available but rather as it tends to be spread out so you spend a lot of time running around and you need to know where to look- or much better, know a Filipino who does. Parts stores here are more like the front of Autozone, O'Reilly's and Pep Boys- lots of crap that doesn't really have anything to do with actual vehicle maintenance. You need to know where the junk yards and parts pullers are and they are often spread out and they don't seem to specialize in one type of vehicle but have a random mix. For new and rebuilt parts you need to go to a wholesaler/actual parts place. Streets are often poorly labeled, one way, poor store signage, etc.- especially in Manila which is stupid crowded with horrible traffic and a lot of construction so it takes forever to get anywhere*- and as a non-local you will get charged the non-local price which can be significantly higher. I don't know anything about Banawe personally- I stay away from the metro Manila area as much as possible.

The Pajero was made for longer here and it's still popular so parts are technically readily available but the best thing is to have a good mechanic who will source them and pick them up. Labor is cheap so it's not like it costs a lot for the mechanic or his helper to spend all day running around. Upholstery is cheap too you can also buy completely refinished interior pieces and ship them too. You can also get custom work like bumpers, roof racks, etc. for a lot less than the US.

If you have a specific list of things that you are looking for let me know and I can try to source them and get back to you. Things that Raysobi listed such as the clear front and rear turn signals, locking hubs, spoilers (including Evo kits for second gen; they even make them for four doors but they looks kinda silly), snorkels (much cheaper here) and the rear ladder would be easy to get although most things like ladders are just custom made. Rear spoilers are common. The 2.5 and 2.8 diesels are probably the most common and you could easily buy engines with all of the parts but the gas engines are around as well. You'd need a shipper to move the larger stuff but that's not too hard either- but it can get expensive.

*Example, I can get to Manila from Clark on the bike in a bit over an hour but a car or bus takes about three hours on average.
