Montero grinding in AWD only

Have a look at your front wheels. You will see a small round object with 6 or so bolts, that is a hub with groves for the splines located on the axles. It is not a grease cup even though it has grease in it. I'm sure his is set up the same way as the Gen 2's.

Mike if it were the axles then I would think it should also happen in 4WD since nothing changes at the hubs between AWD and 4WD. That's the way I understand it anyways... Be interesting to learn what you discover Mudrunner.

okay I'm out here playing with it now, when it is in AWD, if I put it in drive and apply the brakes, the left axle turns inside the hub, but the wheel does not turn, causing the grinding. I'm going to the parts store now to see the bearings & hubs. when I put it in 4h, the axles in front does not turn, and no grinding.

Do you mean you can turn it by hand or is the rig up on jack stands and you're putting it in drive?

Found the problem I think it's called the free floating hub. It's the piece on the end with the 6 volt going thru it, that is the part that has the splines. Dealer wants $180, I'm headed to the junk yard. Thanks again for all the help guys.
