Montero reliable?

I've been looking at Monteros for quite some time but I've always grown up being told that they were always so unreliable. I've been reading up on them and havedriven a couple and now I'm more curious as to if there's anything wrong with them? I want to start traveling and do some light weekend overland trips.

I have some thoughts on this.

The Montero is the poor mans land cruiser. It was the top of the line SUV for Mitsubishi back in the day. They pulled out a lot of stops to make it shine in their line up and compete with other luxury SUVs. Because if that, Monteros are well/over built. They really are amazing trucks. However, because they are often cheaper than land cruisers or land rovers, they often get picked up for less, and then get taken care of less and abused more often. What I mean is, cutting corners on maintenance, neglecting basic care and just rough treatment over all. This makes any car unreliable. I’ve seen a lot of Monteros like this and they do seem to need a lot of work. I believe that this is why they get a bad rap from people about their reliability.

HOWEVER! If they are taken care of, they perform very well and last. Mine is very reliable, no major issues or things that are out of the ordinary. I bought mine from the PO who owned it for 100,000 miles and had every maintenance record for it since new.

From what I can gather, Monteros fair far better than a lot of American made trucks, and especially jeeps. But they are not as reliable as Toyota’s. I would say they come in 2nd behind Yotas. That being said, they do have their issues (depending on year and generation). I’m thinking of stuff like brake boosters, timing belt tensions, camber bolts seizing (gen 3). These can be big issues and a lot of Monteros suffer from the same kinds of issues, but at this point in their age, we have found most of the issues, people have dealt with them, and we have solutions that actually fix the issues. So that’s less of a problem and more of a speed bump.

So there is a bunch of thoughts on this. TLDR: Yes, I think they are reliable.

Well if I can give you a short answer of my personal opinion...I sold my XJ to buy my Montero.

I have never second guessed my actions and would do it all over again in a heartbeat.
My XJ had a rebuilt 4.0 and ran perfect. Awesome truck but seeing them everywhere made me bored of my rig.

As for reliability, I trust some import vehicles more than domestics from experience, and I have owned many domestic and imports of all kinds.

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
Rambo has it right, most reliability issues are from neglect. I have owned several over 200k miles and a couple over 300k, I've owned all configurations of Monteros sold stateside except Gen 3 with the 3.5. Each Gen has it's own set of issues but the most reliable are the Gen 1 V6 and any Gen 2 and that's mostly for being simpler and having Aisin transmissions (Not that the Gen 3 V5A51 isn't great just not as tough). All of these trucks are great.

The xj was my first car I've had it for about 4 or so years. Over those 4 years I've rebuilt the top half of the engine, rebuilt the transfer case, snorkel kit, 3 inch lift. So I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty and fix the neglect if I do end up getting a Montero. Is it true about the aftermarket?? I've heard their isn't a lot out of the States but I hear there's companies in Australia and asia.

+1 to most reliability issues stemming from neglect. Problem is they're almost all neglected. I had XJs before. They're easier to find in better shape and easier to work on. The Montero looks cooler and drives better (besides the power difference, 4.0s are brutes.) and is bigger.

I'm not sure which i would pick if i were to do it again. Probably another Land Cruiser. My neglected $3000 Montero has been an enormous pain and has cost me more than my FZJ80 at this point.

My comments are from the view point of a Gen2 Montero. Our Gen3 was so different to the point that i wouldn't cross shop them.

I bought our 96 in December from the original owners with 214k miles on it, it was properly maintained and I regularly take my family camping into an area that is 30 miles from the nearest cell service without a worry in the world about reliability. Could a Toyota do the same, perhaps, but at 3 or times the cost of our Montero. Our 98 has 174k miles on it and runs like new, had it almost 4 years and will be finding a new home soon.

Oh, and it's great being able to run 33's with no lift, try that with a Toyota or any other SUV.

Ok. Did it. In my driveway. Truck was $5300. I dunno where you dudes find your 1 owner all records Gen2s for a half pack of gum and some pocket lint, but Toyota cost of entry is not 3x that of a Montero. No way, no how.

Like all things on the internet, the truth is in the middle. Yeah, Toyotas as a rule are more money to get into. 3x though? Can't fit 33s without mods?

Don't take my thoughts the wrong way, i do like my Montero, and i'll like it even more when it receives the many thousands of dollars needed to correct the remaining things i dislike about it.

The point is, get one because you like it. If you're looking just because you think it's a budget alternative and would rather something else if you had the money? Save longer and get what you want.

I’ll challenge this just a bit. Check out my build thread. The last post talks about how much I’ve spent and what all I’ve done so far. I would say the Montero is an amazing value for the amount of vehicular that you get. https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/rambo-penguins-gen-3-build.193868/

I'm talking about a Gen2, though. Our Gen3 was also a different scenario. It was nice. We liked it. It didnt cost much less than an FJ100, but also had some advantages over the FJ80 and FJ100 Land Cruisers we cross-shopped at that point. It also had some advantages over my Gen2.

Hard to cross shop though. Gen3s are great value, if you're looking for a Gen3.
