Montero V6 - Timing Belt Tensioner Failure?

Toasty

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
Yeah I wouldn't drive it like that (or start it again), the 3.8 is easy. There are some timing service videos you can follow on Youtube. Get your tensioner from the dealer or in an Asian kit, the OEM part is NOK brand.

Thanks. Do I have to do the whole timing belt service, or can I just do a quick tensioner job? We have a couple of inches of snow on the ground and it's damn cold outside, up here in the mountains.

And am I replacing the tensioner itself or the tensioning pulley?

If the tensioner failed, then you are going to reset the timing belt since obviously, if it sounds like that it's probably out of time. That sucks and wish you best of luck but don't rush it, get it right.

Timing belt was done about 20k miles ago. I don't think the tensioner has ever been replaced. If I can simply swap the tensioner without touching the belt, I'll do that now, and then do the belt in the spring when the weather is warmer...

Not possible to do the tensioner without the whole belt having to come off. If you've never done it before plan for about 6 ish hours of meticulously doing it so you don't mess it up. Longest part of the while process is actually getting to the timing belt and tensioner since a bunch of stuff has to come off

I actually think you can do the tensioner without the whole belt coming off.... assuming you can pull the crank pulley off with out the crank timing gear coming off too. Use some binder clips to hold the belt on the cam gears. Be sure to put it in tdc before you begin.

Once the tensioner comes off, be careful to that the belt doesn't slip off the crank gear.

20 k on the timing belt isn't much.. replacement is more like 80k.

that's what mine was doing in my 2.5 gen. but mine was also 30k or so past the change interval so I did the whole job.
