So I'm actually going to look at that 2001 with 2,300 miles on it this afternoon - what would be member's concerns about a vehicle like this?

He says it's registered and inspected and I can take it for a drive no problem, I'll get the VIN and run a carfax on it if I'm serious about buying and can get him down to a reasonable amount. Hopefully find out a lot more about maintenance, if any, which I'm sure tells much of the story about what to expect.

I assume I'd change all fluids immediately unless he's done it and can prove it

But with that few miles, should I expect a bunch of problems with seals once it starts actually being driven some real miles? What parts might I have to throw at it just from age if not use?

Hey guys, new to the site, and I just found this on CL.

I got laid off and lost the work truck, so I've been looking around for something to go camping and pull the boat with. All indications point to these things being reliable and awesome off road. What do you guys think of this? I am thinking of going and checking it out on Monday. Any help/info from you guys would be greatly appreciated, since I am a newbie when it comes to Monteros...

Mascot, that looks super clean, and it has the rear locker. It's priced too high though. It's probably worth about $3,500. Look at the alternator. Look for oil leaking down onto it from the valve covers above. Give the tie rods a good wiggle, see if their worn. If so, use these to talk the price down. They are comon issues, and pretty minor. Look at the condition of the spare. Find out if the tools and plug in light are still present in the back cargo area. Listen to all the speakers (dry rot in the paper cones is common). Ask about the timing belt and spark plugs. Put it into 4Low and drive around. If it wasn't used much, it may have difficulties engaging (lights on dash will still blink instead of turning solid). Easy issue, just sludge buildup. Also, it's common for a few of the dash light bulbs to be out, such as gear indicators.

That rig looks great. Just get the price down

That's good to hear. I was thinking it was a little high, just from looking through this thread. Thanks man!

I can't remember what Willwinchforfoods dads name is but iirc he is a wire member and I believe was mid 3.5 motor swap into a gen 1. Could be the same but some reason the user name Nate something or other sticks out in my mind.

Yeah, that's a great truck there. Nwoods covered it well. We can't find any like that down here. Or they are priced at crack-head prices.

So I went and looked at it today. The radio doesnt work, the spare has a screw in it, and its leaking a little oil onto the cat. It also needs new brakes. All of the 4wd systems seemed to work, and it was in pretty decent condition. They dont have any records for timing belts or anything like that though, so I offered 3500, and he said the lowest he can go is 4600. I said thanks but no thanks and dipped out of there. I dont feel like paying 4600 for something that I am immediately going to tear apart to do the timing belt, valve covers, etc. I'm not crazy right?

No your not crazy , I'm sure it's leaking more oil than you think. Plus with no service records yea timing belt for sure needs to be done. That price is way high.
