ATK 4.7-liter Stroker Motor

ANNOUNCEMENT:
Following up on Mopar’s announcement last year that it would investigate adding a stroker motor to its portfolio, the parts maker displayed a 4.7-liter engine on the XJ Stroker vehicle at Moab. This is the same motor that won the 4×4 SUV category at the 2008 Score International Baja 1000 in Essenada, Mexico. Mopar plans to launch the ATK 4.7-liter Stroker motor for Jeep vehicle applications starting in September 2009.

With this announcement from Mopar, do you think they will be offering this for all model years of Cherokees and Wranglers that came equipped with an inline six?

Do you think that since it is from Mopar they will include an ECM Flash that matches the needs of the new engine?

What do you think the asking price will be? A new engine from ATK is only $2500

If it's anything like the Mopar branded Rubicon Express stuff I expect it'll be priced right around $3999.

:D

Seems to be a typo on their web page. 242 CID is 4.0 liters. But now I'm just picking nits.

As cool as it is that they are offering this..

We don't need a 4.7 stroker

We need the 2.8 VM engine :)

why don't the get that?

Yes, the 2.8 VM would be great. They show cased a diesel conversion a while back and then never came to market with it. Of course the week after they showed it the price of diesel shot up to $5gal.

I will start a new thread about the diesel option of TJ's.

Here in Canada, diesel fuel is cheaper than gas, and running a diesel powered vehicle is no issue.....why don't they release it here????

We have diesel Cherokees all over the place, we have CRD Libertys everywhere.

We have VW TDi's running rampant.....with 1100km distance capacities on the tanks.

Come on Jeep, get those diesels in those JK's and start selling them here!!

I love the sound of a 4.7 I6 stroker from a fun perspective. I mean that thing should IDLE up most obstacles like a diesel... BUT, I shudder to think of the milage you won't get with this motor and frankly I think I'd rather just swap in a diesel.

But I sure would like to drive one. The 4.0 is already quite torquey as is let alone stroked, I'll bet it'd pull a house off it's foundation.

Anone here have any experience with one of these? I've never really seen one or read any real good accounts of what the motor is like after stroking it out that much.

Cheers

Dave

Actually, if you follow some of the stroker threads over at NAXJA, the well designed and thought out ones (see old_man/Tom Houston, among others) end up getting the same or better mileage as stock when turning 35" tires.

It's all about the details (quench and compression) that go into the engine and gearing. Make use of the torque you are building so that the engine is not labouring trying to turn big rubber at high aerodynamic and drag loads (i.e. cruise).

Don't ask me about the details, I'm just casually interested in the idea of a stroker at this point. :) There's enough info on NAXJA about strokers to make your head explode with overload.

We need this motor :sombrero: I'm sure the price will be around 4 grand. It would be a nice upgrade and if my motor ever blows this is the route I will take. Diesel would be too much of a smog issue for the older cherokees and vehicles that already have the 4.0. You could slide in a 4.7 and still run the vehicle on the road in states that have smog.

I've been trying to figure this out for a good 10 years now. Don't have an answer...

Probably our silly politicians... They're always screwing something up.

Agreed. You can buy a lot of gas for the minimal difference in economy that diesel will get you over the additional costs of swapping it into a machine that wasn't designed around a diesel power plant.

If you are going overseas that is one thing but for staying here 87 octane gas is perfect for a truck.

I respect the love for diesel engines but if you really must have diesel and can't put a diesel engine in right now with what is available to you now I'd suggest you started with the wrong platform. It is just a bunch of whinjing.

Don't mind me. I think diesel is over-rated/unnecessary in a Jeep, particularly on this continent. I realize that diesel is considered de rigueur in expedition circles... but we are talking about Jeeps in North America that will likely never go farther south than Mexico.

Even if diesel was available form the factory I'm not certain that I would buy a diesel powered Jeep over a gas powered one for my intended usage. Maybe, but it's not something I would go out of my way to re-engineer afterwards.

This motor was really amazing. Night and day to my well geared rig. Figure about $5k for a plug and play stroker.

$5k? Golen's is 3.5k. I've not heard anything nice about thier stuff, but that price seems more reasonable.

That being said...I'll have less than 1k in my 4.6L stroker.

Plug and Play and Warrantied would be really nice. Plus if it comes with some sort of ECM flash then I don't mind $5k at all.

Yeah, if they can bring it out for around $4-5k plug and play, just install and go, that could very well be worth it. No messing around trying to figure out the best tune for your piggyback, no messing around with how much flow you need from your injectors. Let them do the work, we just install it and drive away. And as Root Moose said, a lot of the guys on NAXJA running strokers are getting better mileage than without. When the engine doesn't have to work as hard, it burns less gas. That's why the TJ with 5.7 Hemi/545RFE conversion from AEV gets better mileage than stock. Well, that and the 5th gear in the auto...:)
