More transmission questions (Auto)

Okay, I've now gone 4 wheeling twice in my '99 4runner. This is the first 4x4 I've ever owned with an automatic transmission, and I've got a couple of questions about techniques.

First off, am I the only one who works in the medical/insurance field who smiles at the "ECT" button on the dashboard? The ECT button, of course, is for the Electronically Controlled Transmission and allows you to select either a "power" or an "economy" setting for the tranny. However, "ECT" is also the abbreviation for a type of psychiatric treatment, Electro-Convulsive Therapy, also known as Electroshock Therapy or just "shock treatment" for short. So I think it's funny that there's an "ECT" button on my dashboard!

Anyway, the first time I went off-road with the 4runner, I left the ECT in the standard (i.e. "economy") position. This most recent time, I decided to put it into "power" mode, thinking this might lead to earlier shifts. I also put the t-case into 4 low so I could take advantage of the extra torque in low range, figuring that the transmission isn't geared as low, so I'd need the extra torque. As a bonus, this also allowed me to toggle on the rear diff lock, which I did.

Most of the day I kept the transmission in L, which, as I understand it, keeps it in the lowest gear setting. A few times when we were moving across relatively flat ground, I would bump the shifter up into 2, which would allow it to shift up one gear, but no further.

I guess that as long as I am shifting manually, either in L or in 2, the position of the ECT button is irrelevant, right? I suppose it might make the tranny shift from 1 to 2 a little bit later than if I had it in the "economy" mode, but other than that I can't think of any difference.

My '99 would have a 4 speed, which is really a 3 speed with an "overdrive." So if I understand it correctly, in L it will only go in 1, in 2 it will go into 1 or 2, in D with the overdrive OFF it will go into 1, 2 or 3, and in D with the overdrive ON it will go into 1, 2, 3, or 4, correct?

So are there any other techniques people use when 'wheeling with an auto? Even though I've been off road for years, this automatic transmission stuff is still new to me.

EDITED TO ADD: Does this vehicle have a "lockup torque converter?" I've heard of that but I'm not certain about what it is - seems to me I've heard it's something that mechanically locks the engine to the transmission so it's not just fluid movement that's making the transmission turn. Are there any transmission upgrades available and if so, what kind of mods are they?

You are correct on all your points regarding the shifting. I personally leave ECT on all the time, helps get the 4runner moving with the 4.30's and 32's. You really won't see that much of a change in mpgs to keep you slugging around with it off.

Not sure about the torque converter lockup, a friend asked me the same question recently. Look up IPT transmission upgrades for tacomas, several of the supercharged guys have had it done. I've seen it discussed here, ttora, and ultimate yota I believe.

Just for fun, i'm assuming you have 4.10's, but you might want to look up your codes on the inside of your door to confirm.

Well my truck is old enough to not have any of that stuff. My VW GTI has a silly ESP (electronic sensing program) button. Same thing. The funny side story is that when we used to do ECTs we called them "jump starts".

i.e. "Yeah, we've got 4 jumps starts tomorrow morning".

For me, this is the first automatic vehicle that I ever owned. I still attempt to step on the "invisible" clutch when I start the vehicle and when I'm about to get off the freeway to down shift. I'm still trying to get used to "down shifting" in an automatic. In essence, kinda funny, I'm learning how to drive an automatic!!! :Wow1:

yes it will. when im crawlin i turn my od off manually.

When you converted from the preRunner to 4wd did you Change out the transmision as well or did you ad a transfer case to the back of the exsiting trans? The reason I ask is, I think the trans computer is different one to the other.

I could be wrong..................It's happened before

swapped out whole thing. BUT, it might be because i have the equivalent of the blue wire mod. which by the way is a great mod. i find myself using 2 low all the time.

My model number is VZN185L-GKPGKA.

Which means I have a 3.909

Or a 4.1

Or a 4.3.

So either I'm reading that wrong or it's of absolutely no help because it lists the same model number with 3 different ratios.

3.909 if you had 15" rims stock

4.10 if you had 265/70 with no locker

4.30 if you have a locker (option.)

Congrats, odds are you have 4.30's.

Those other charts are ok for seeing ratio/tire sizes, but the gear codes are for early yotas. The one I posted relates to your 4runner.

It took me forever to finally find the ECT Tech page.

http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h16.pdf

I have the ECT in my 4Runner.

When set in "Power Mode" , what it really does is hold your gear in place longer until you reach a higher RPM to give you more power. I think I remember that when using this it detunes your engine some to make this happen, thus using more fuel. It's similar to when you have a stick shift, and you want to go faster, you hold your gear into a higher RPM longer before you shift.

I never use my Power position on the trails. That's not what it is made for, and you won't notice any difference.

It could be used for instance to help merge onto a busy freeway with increased power for safety. Or to race a Porsche from a stop light!

This whole Auto tranny thing is also tied to a temp. sensor at your firewall. You will also notice in the morning that your O/D will not engage until your engine has hit about 162*. Just more Toyota Auto Trivia.:sombrero:

Not doubting you, but I'm curious: What's your source? Because both of the links provided by SWR indicate that my code (B04A) means 4.56 gears.
