Mounting options for cargo basket on camper shell

I am looking to install a cargo basket on my camper shell. Currently there is no mounting system at all up there, and no gutters for any kind of standard mount. Is there any reason to go with towers and crossbars, then mount the basket to the cross bars, or is it best to just use the style tower that the basket mounts directly to, or even just mounting the basket directly to the shell? Is there any advantage to the additional cross bars (other than the ability to remove basket and switch to some other storage system - which I am unlikely to do)?

The basket will be used for gear storage, awning and light mounting only, there will not be a RTT on board.
