Mounting spare tire in roof basket

I've been going back and forth over this issue. I really thought I wanted a swing out for the spare and extra fuel, but the cost of a new bumper and all that entails...well, there's a reason I don't have one yet. And mhiscox makes a good point about having to open it every time you want to get into the back. I cuss my wife's swing away bike rack on the back of the Burb.

That being said, my 285/75r16 with factory wheel is a bit heavy to throw around over my head. Perhaps a rear winch mounted under the bed, with a series of pulleys that end in a crane arm mounted to the top of the shell. I think Rube Goldberg may have designed one already...:sombrero:

Roof mounted spare tires look cool, however, they obviously are not for everyone. Being a 62 year-old man, the thought of wrestling a 80,90, or 100 lb. tire up onto or off of a vehicle's roof is not a pleasant thought. What about the change in the center of gravity of the vehicle? I've seen lots of guys puting spare tires, gas cans, and God only knows what else on their roofs. I doubt if any of these people ever thought of what might happen in an off-camber situation. Just my humble opinion but not for me, thanks.
hehehehe.....I'm 63....trust me next year...you won't be able to get it off the rack at all:sombrero:
