A couple of years ago I was told of a mountain bike trail that you can take into Yellowstone. The trail was said to be about 100+ miles and take a couple of days to bike.

Anyone know of this trail or if it even exisit?

Starting to do some research.

I wish that such a trail existed. 100 years ago one could bicycle anywhere in the park. Now it is not only forbidden, but possibly very dangerous. For now, other than a couple short trails, we have to be content with riding the roads in and through the park. Fortunately the speed limit is 45, making the roads relatively safe.

East of the park there is some riding in Wyoming. Grizzly bears are an issue. North of the park is the Gallatin Crest, temporarily closed due to an environmental lawsuit. It was about a 1-1/2 day ride. Northwest of the park is a good one day ride from Hebgen Lake to Taylor Fork. West of the park is a good quality segment of Continental Divide Trail south of the town of West Yellowstone. Just north of this is the endangered area called Lionhead. Very good riding here, some grizzlies though. Further west, about 20 miles from the park, is the Centennial Range, with about 3 days of riding along the crest. North of the Centennials is the Gravelly Range. This has a gravel road along the crest, with ATV trails leading off of it, and apparently a couple singletrack trails that I am not familiar with.

I guess that you either heard about the Gallatin Range or the Centennial Range.

In YNP: Biking is only allowed on a very limited number of trails and old road beds that are not contiguous, and not in the back country at all. It is also allowed on all roads cars are allowed on. Unfortunately some of the roads are narrow, and there are large RVs with inexperienced drivers operating them. Personally I think the towing mirrors on pickups are more dangerous.

In Grand Teton National Park there is a new long bike trail through the park that is being extended down to Jackson, and north. It is fully paved and relatively flat.

Now having said that, there are a number of, gravel roads, fire roads and jeep trails in the surrounding areas. Mountain biking is allowed on all of them that allow motor vehicle use, and some selected roads and trails that don't allow motor vehicles. Check with the National Forest offices for the forests to get Motor Vehicle Use Maps and current closure information.

Because of the pace bicycles operate at some think they may be much more likely to invoke the chase reflex in many predators. Who knows if this is true. I recommend bear spray.

There's a video around recently of a wolf chasing a cyclotourist in Yellowstone!

There's uber epic riding out of West Yellowstone... that's all the reason you need to check it out. Talk to the lovely gals at Freeheel and Wheel in West. To the south, plenty of great rides out of Jackson.
