Looking for a RIG...

Needs to Tow my Jeep to and from the Trail..

Be able to get back to my cabin which is off of 2 tracks 4 miles from the last plowed road.

Seat me and my girl comfortably with room for gear...

Im looking at

F250/Dodge 2500
Ford 150
Chevy 1500/2500

I like the simplicity of the solid axle trucks.. Im gonna run regular gas
id like to be able to run 33-35" tires, with the ability to add Lockers and a winch bumper..

Any opinions

OH PS I have "0" brand loyality as far as Ford V Chevy V Dodge

Thanks

JIM

Power Wagon

A late model Dodge Power Wagon meets all of your requirements and comes from the factory with a 12,000-pound winch, 33-inch tires, and front and rear lockers.
I've been very happy with mine.

i'm gonna have to say the late model power wagon i love mine and i'm running 35s with stock suspension

and it has a 15000 lb winch its just marked as a 12000 lb winch

only mods i can really suggest doing with the power wagon is a locker bypass so you can lock up when ever you want to

and i would have to agree with jcbrandon i love my power wagon.

Any of the trucks mentioned can do what you're asking ... narrow down a budget, model year (new? late model? 10 years old okay?) and you'll have to decide based on your own preferences ... asking an internet forum is like asking 1st graders what color jellybeans taste the best.

Good luck in your search,
Carl

CLEAR ON THAT...

Im thinking 2005-2009

Price-- 40,000 ish (Im clear that the Dodge is more but right now you can haggle)

And we all know that RED tastes the best then Purple

40K should get you a very nice late model rig. Maybe even new! You'll get 100 different answers from 100 different guys on this, so I would recommend to just go out & drive them!

If you go Dodge, get the Power Wagon since you won't get lockers for the non PW trucks. The only downfall is no Diesel....

GM's are great, except for the IFS.... Can be cured with an aftermarket SAS

Ford has more driveline upgrades available (lockers, suspension)

Or........ just get a van!! ;) And stay away from the half tons if you plan to tow.

I'm a Ford and Toyota guy, so that being said an F250 or Tundra would be my first picks, but if the Power Wagon was offered in a Diesel it would be the best off the shelf truck available. Since it isnt my F250 will become a Power Wagon, and I'll be better equipped with 7.3 diesel power for $20K cheaper when its all said & done.

Since you have no brand loyality, the only recomendation I would make would be to do some serious searching on Craigslist, Ebay Motors and forums like this.

When we were looking for our Tow Vehicle to go out on our adventure, I wanted something brand new so I would have the benefits of a solid warranty. We were looking at new Ford F-250 & 350's PSD. That meant we were looking in the $60,000 range:oops:

What we found was a few year old model that was fully loaded, every option available (except Leather which we didnt want anyway) with very low miles. It still had the factory warranty and we were able to buy an extended warranty for a few grand (that we've used a few times for simple items paying it off already).

In the long run, we paid $27,000 which allowed us to put on a bunch of add-on's that we were planning on to begin with and still saved $20,000!!:wings:

I'd look around before buying new if you have the time to wait out these troubled times. People are selling off some nice stuff right now for pretty cheap

id say stay away from the power wagon if your going to tow regularly. youd be alot better off getting a diesel and just adding the winch and lockers. you can probably add everything to a diesel for cheaper anyway plus you get the diesel engine for towing.

There aren't any aftermarket lockers currently available for the Dodge axles. And usually, factory lockers are cheaper than aftermarket.

UJoint is correct. I've been looking for a couple years. Hopefully that will change before long...on one of the Dodge/Cummins forums I frequent there are rumors that ARB will have an air locker available by the end of 2009. In the meantime I am really careful as to where I take my Ram.
