One thing about GMRS is that the repeaters are business oriented and typically not "open" as the ones in ham radio are. A mobile mounted GMRS radio will have tremendous advantage over a handheld in direct comms, but don't expect that you'll be able to find a repeater to use.

Most of the commercial class radios are not "front pannel" programmable. There are a few just hard to find. Others are programmable from a programming cable and a laptop. Some of the Kenwoods have the front panel programming. Try looking for tk-805. You mostly pick the frequencies and tones that you want to use and put those in. You may be able to get your buddies to change to what you have programmed.

Also understand that the "privacy" tones are not really. It will stop the casual listener but if somebody wants to listen they will get the tones in time.

There's NO such thing as Privacy Tones..... they Do NOT make anything private. they are used to activate( open) repeaters and other radios that aere set for tone squelch. anybody with a radio that has a manual squelch, can hear every word you say.

I have seen it listed as "privacy" tones/codes/line in several manuals. Just wanted to point out that they are not doing any type of privacy type functions. So should anybody think that they are going to secure their over-the-air communications... It won't. But thanks for reminding me that some of these radios have a manual squelch. I had been tinkering with the bubble pack radios this past weekend on this very subject.

The simple answer to this, would be if the club is stable enough. That they get a license for transient VHF or UHF user Freq.s The club could hold a license and grant users "permission" to operate.
