My 2015 Toyota Tacoma DC TRD Off-Road

Sold the Jeep earlier this week. Went to the local dealer and got a special "Employee Buyer Program" discount offered to where I work. Ended up paying less than I thought I would so I was pretty stoked.

Here it is. 2015 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Off-Road. Glad to have the Jeep gone even though it was fun. But I needed something a little more practical and not a money pit for maintenance.



Don't think I'll make this a build thread since it'll be awhile till I get anything done to this thing. After awhile I'll start with the add ons and I'll make a thread for that. For right now it'll tow my tear drop and I'll go camping.

Good looking truck. You will not regret the decision. I've been a diehard Jeep guy for years, but finally made the change to A Tacoma last November. I've owned some nice Jeeps (TJ Brute, 5.7L Hemi TJ, prestine 95 YJ) and my DCSB Taco blows them all away. It's much more comfortable and practical for a DD. Congrats!

Seems to be the trend lately, haha.

I was ready for a new vehicle and the new Rubicon was too expensive and I figured I'd try something else out. I'm sure I'll be sticking with this for quite some time.

Years back I was deciding between a Toyota Pickup and a Jeep. After many months of research (there weren't many forums back then) what I determined was that Toyota owners never seemed to talk about working on their truck. On the other hand Jeep owners seemed to revel in the various trail repairs they had to make and enjoyed nothing better than the opportunity to fix a broken Jeep in the wilderness. Now that isn't a completely fair comparison of course, but there definitely seemed to be a different attitude about repairs and reliability between the two camps and I knew which one I was going to fit into.

My Jeep was a DD. So I couldn't get too crazy when wheeling. I found myself mainly on forest roads cruising around and going camping more than doing full out wheeling. I didn't see upgrading to another Jeep was necessary. Though, I would totally do another Jeep cuz there's a lot of options out there to make it your own. I just found that maintenance and things falling apart was less on the Toyota than another Jeep. In the end I can get more life and less repair bills to fix things if I went with the Toyota. If I wanna go out wheeling, I'll just ask to sit shotgun with a Jeep buddy.

From what I've seen, Toyota communities tend to have (at least slightly) less infighting. I like both and for a little while I enjoyed being part of the jeep community but there's far too many rednecks who love to complain about how new jeeps aren't "real jeeps" anymore because they have newfangled aspects like safety equipment, and don't compare to the $5000 rust bucket they bought 20 years ago. Congratulations on the purchase OP, great looking truck!

I am just curious what maintenance you were doing on your Jeep? I always hear about lots of maintenance, but the Wrangler is pretty basic. Were you rebuilding stuff?

I guess if the jeep is kept 100% stock it may not be too bad for maintenance. I mean aside from the fact that all of the plastic lined ball joints give up, the stock tie rod, drag link and trac bars bend and flex, the bolts are undersized and threaded full length (destroying bushing sleeves and wallowing out mounting points). Oh and the bad transmissions and transfer case bearings off of the lot. Oh and the cylinder heads, water pumps. Oh and... Nevermind I'll stop. Now add some aftermarket stuff on to those weak points. Try using it off road and getting it to drive straight down the freeway without severe vibrations. I was constantly working on mine. Very fun and capable but what a pain if you're trying to use it for a multi purpose rig.
