My 60 mods thread

If you rebuild the seats let me know I have a guy that did mine for $120 + the cost of the foam inserts from Spectre. Best thing I have ever done to the 60 as far as making a really noticeable difference. I don't know where you are in So Cal but his turn around is usually the same day if he isn't too busy.

I'm 80-100 miles north of SFV depending on where you measure from/to. There's a local guy who is a pleasure to deal with, though not likely that inexpensive. Thanks for the foam info! Have been wondering just how much of that sort of thing is available.

Not really a mod, but......

Trailer is also 6 lug. The landing jack tire doesn't normally stay on, I was just moving things around.

:sombrero: That's awesome!

.....picking up some better bucket seats.

I've got an original passenger side bucket seat that has been reupholstered. Since I put the bench in I'll never use it. It's yours. Just swing by on your way home from Utah and grab it. Oh wait...I could just send it up with Durango_no60. He's the one who did the work on it anyway.

I am buying a rolled fj60 with a newly rebuilt 2F, 5speed, and rebult transfer. It also has a full OME 2.5" lift, 40 galon aux tank, and mnay more options. I am parting out the whole thing. any interest?

Kraig

How much do you want for the 5 speed?

He's got a FS thread on MUD with a line a mile long full of people wanting the 5 speed, the aux tank, and the OME. He has a price list there too.

Not sure which way I'm going to go with the seats yet. More than likely a complete swap for something with better lumbar and side supports. Nice offer though, thank you Ryan.

Some rooting around the net has turned up the possibility of using a "David" doubler as the trans to t/c adapter. What I don't yet know is what the price difference will be between that and an AA adapter.
I suspect that the 700R4 will require moving the t/c back anyway, so another 7.5" shouldn't be too big of an issue.

Why don't you just go with the Toy Box from Marlin Crawler. It's a bolt on application to the transmission you're talking about. Plus, it's a Marlin. Can't go wrong there. I'm hoping to put one in this summer.

Then to get really fancy, take the lock plate off your transfer case and get the twin sticks from FC Fabrication. The different crawl ratios in 2 or 4 wheel drive are amazing and fun to think about.

The Toybox is an option, but doesn't bolt directly to the 700 - it uses an adapter. The appeal of the David is that it's 'normal' front attachment pattern is the same as the 241 it would replace. So only one adapter in the mix which has the potential to be shorter overall. The 241's ratio (2.7:1) is identical to that of the David. I don't think that's an accident. That low range ratio has worked well for me in the Sub given the same 3.73 axle ratio and nearly the same OD tire (285 vs. 33).
Next week I need to make some calls & set up a decision matrix.
It may well be that a simple adapter is the most cost effective, but the 241's low range has spoiled me. The LC's vehicle speed at idle in 1st-low range is noticeably faster than the Sub's.

Groan.
OK, so I've got everything official taken care of. The state knows it's mine and the Ins Co is now charging me for the priviledge of driving it. Only thing remaining is the part coming in the mail.
Yea!

Now for the groan. Took the GF for a ride last weekend and she commented that she could smell raw fuel. This is NFG as I'm hoping that she will be a frequent passenger or driver. That is, aside from the obvious reasons for it being NFG.
I ran an errand in the 60 a couple days agao and the smell got considerably more pronounced after filling it up. Don't know if that is significant or not. Today I let it warm up and idle in the driveway while I poked & prodded looking for something obvious. Nothing. Got whiffs of fuel here and there, but could not pin down a source, and no obvious (& immensely helpful) drips anywhere.

After reading James' thread (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15784) I got wondering about the charcoal cannister. Wish I had a spare to R&R it with as a test.

While I'm thinking about it, source for an FSM? Dealer or does one of the supporting vendors carry them?
Comments or suggestions?

Just a suggestion....

Check your fuel lines at the gas tank. I have a similar issue with my 60. When I fill up to the max, I notice the slightest bit of fuel dripping out of one of the lines at the tank. This only occurs when I fill my tank up completely. Lately, I have been putting about one to two gallons less in it and there are no leaks (except from my t-case!) and there is no smell. Surely I need to fix this properly, but I tend to be lazy from time to time. Good luck!

So wait, your GF could articulate that the distinct odor she was finding offensive was specifically raw fuel, as opposed to, well, anything else?

And she is right in this diagnoses?

Sounds like a keeper...

I have this same problem with my 60. It's noticeably more pronounced in the warmer months and when I fill it really full. I think it has something to do with the evap lines and the fact I have a cheap after market cap on there? I don't know. I just don't fill it completely full and that usually solves the problem until I can actually fix it. I'm up to my elbows in grease right now rebuilding the front axle I broke last week.

If the fume smell is in the cab, many times it is a result of a vapor lock in the vent tube. If you pull the return line from the charcoal canister and blow into it until there is no resistance you may find the problem fixed.
