My 98 disco with a 4.6

As some of you may know I work at JC's British & 4X4 as a tech. Last October I had the opportunity to buy a lifted 98 Disco with a blown engine. The engine blew in spectacular fashion twisting the #7 and #8 rods around the crankshaft and blowing a hole in the side of the block. Talking with Jeff we hatched a plan to install a 4.6 instead of just swapping the 4.0 for a good used 4.0. We had a good used 4.6 from a range rover on the shelf but he knew it had a cylinder liner knock. We tackled the pinning procedure while it was on the stand. Long story short I fired it up tonight and it runs beautifully. On with the pics!

Installed (excuse the belt diagram, had to use a used radiator from another vehicle as mine was falling apart)

Just have to add the finishing touches.

So whacha think of the power?

btw: if you have autologic, reset it for the 4.6, if it throws a fit about electronic trans, set it for manual.

We do have auto logic. How do you reset it? I have not driven it yet as I just started it and still have to reinstall the hood.

Nice. Love to hear more about what is involved in "pinning" the sleeve?
Cheers

Not sun roof protection. It's a modern take on the classic Series safari roof!

Drove it home tonight, amazing power compared to my 95.

Thank you Sedat for the heads up on switching in auto logic.

anytime! makes you wish all the discoveries had it optionally.

Makes a night and day difference with the engine that I built. In both of the trucks it was installed in.

I am seriously entertaining doing the same swap in my 95. It just drives so much smoother than the 3.9. May have something to do with the Gems vs the 14CUX.

I also put a 4.6 from a range river in my 01 disco. What a difference! Lots more power. It was an easy swap. Then i sold the disco to my brother... he is a lucky man.

Acceleration data from my 4.6 swap, data taken via "dynolicious" app for iProduct:

98D1, 235/85R16 tires, stock gears, no "armor", roof rack, etc. Normal load of driver + 100lb of stuff.

Original 4.0 W/190,000 Miles:

0-60 = 12.62 sec.
1/4 mile = 19.08 @72.7mph
Calculated 170HP

"New" 4.6 w/89,000 Miles (replaced timing set and spark plugs at install, otherwise used, as-is engine):

0-60 = 9.98 sec.
1/4 mile = 17.64@78.3
Calculated 198HP

Then I dragged a co-worker in his commuter 2009 Ford Fusion 4-banger, auto...he beat me by a car length. Regardless of the 4.6 it's still SLOW.
