My Disco2 Build

Man that will look sweet when you get cleaned up and painted. What about the mesh flooring that they use on utility trailers. It can be had for fairly cheap.

I like to have a lot of cross bars for mounting things to and straps and whatnot, but I also like having removable panels for flooring when I want to use it as roof/platform/whatever, firewood, chairs, whatever.... So I went with some strong plastic chicken coop flooring panels that interconnect and are easy to zip tie down. They don't rust and are very light.

Okay, I did a bit of work on my rack. Now my cargo box fits and I have a place to stick my shovel and axe. Stage 1 is complete. The next stage will include flooring and lowering it about an 1/4" off the top of the roof. That way I can park it in the garage with the roof rack still on.

Pictures!

Cut out the front supports for the tubing.

Sorry its a little hazy in there from the welding. I then welded the tubes back together with some plate.

Then I added some plate and built a piece to clamp the shovel and ax to the rack.

All Done. I'll put it on the Rover on Monday.

spark plugs. yup, still sparkin'.

Anyway. Christmas present is installed. Lowered it about 3/4" all around. Now it sits about 1/4" off the roof at the back. Hope I can get out of the garage. otherwise I'll have to deflate the tires.

So to get the factory roof rails off I had to take a part the whole interior. Not a lot of run. The middle set of bolts holding it on really sucked because of the rear air conditioning vents in the roof.

Still need to get some plugs for the roof. right now duct tape is doing the job of keeping rain out.

Man while you that liner out you should bedline it or paint it

I used bedliner in my old rover and it turned out awesome!

Looking good. Great color.

I did many of those same trails through Canyonlands, needles, elephant hill and beef basin. Great scenery and cool trails.

Sure seems like more modifications are required on a disco to get to the same level of capability as the p38 if you don't go above 33inch tires. But there is more support and you can build a disco bigger (35inch tires). I prefer the interior of the p38 but the disco has more usable cargo space.

Are you glad you made the switch?

I had to make the switch. I needed 6 seats since I have 4 kids and my wife.

The disco has been easy to work on. The HVAC works great, and doesn't have the issues my P38 had. I like the CDL, and being able to manually shift the transfer case. I don't have to spend lots of time fixing blown out tail light bulbs. everything thing on it just works. There are also tons of parts. My new job keeps me pretty busy. I don't have time to fabricate everything. So, If I can just buy a part and bolt it on, that's what I do. The money I make working is worth more then taking the time to build parts.

The downsides: the suspension doesn't flex as well, the traction control isn't as good, and the interior seating is smaller. And funny enough I miss the 4.6L V8 and ZFHP24 transmission. It seems like the ZFHP22 is always hunting for gears.

I have three inches of lift and I'm running 265/75/16's. I need longer shocks for the back. But other then that, I really like it. I do miss my P38, and I'm pining for another Range Rover. If my company decides to get me a company vehicle to use, I'm going to get a newer Range Rover or LR4.

Cheers

It is the difference in the 4.6 vs the 4.0 you are seeing. The Hp22 and 24 boxes are the same. The 24 has stronger " larger " internal parts.

Probably correct. It just doesn't seem as smooth as the range rivers transmission. Probably that lack of power
