My Disco2 Build

Just got back from another trip to Moab. I rescued a poor broken down Jeep Cherokee off of Top of the World. All of his Jeep buddies left him sitting there. No one else would drag his POS back down for him. No pictures, because I didn't want to embarrass the poor guy.

Anyway a few pictures.

Man, I have had fun looking through this. How are you guys keeping these sound with the slipped sleeve/head gasket issues? My wife had an 04 and it blew up on us. Sold it for parts. I am driving a D90 with the same motor essentially, but for whatever reason the HG issues have not been a big problem.
It is mainly the end of the '03 and the '04 production runs. The tooling for the blocks was getting a little sloppy and LR didn't remedy it since 04 was the last of it. It can be remedied with a rebuild, sealing the block, and using pinned top hat liners. The Cannibal motors have this done. You're looking at least $5g to do it either way. The Youtube video of the guy heating up the block to 200 degrees F on his grill and pulling out the liners with his gloved hands is classic. LR should have made this right by their customers but did not. I still miss my Disco though in spite of it's suicide. Other than the motor, it was a great rig. BTW, it had been impeccably maintained.

I got a TJM bumper for a Disco 1. It didn't fit like I liked, and it was bent to hell from the previous owners, but it was a good base to start with. This is what I got done tonight. I should have taken a picture of the bumper before I cut it up, but oh well. Plans are to get this thing fitting as close to the body as possible, then trim the rear of the body for extra clearance. I'll also build a swing out tire carrier with jerry can holders. I really don't like jerry cans on my roof rack. I may even add a cooler holder/platform thingamajig.

Took the old busted stock bumper off to see what I had to work with. The brackets for the TJM bumper didn't line up with much on the back of the frame. After pondering the situation for a bit, I broke out the grinder and a cut off wheel

This is post cut, and starting to work on the bumper mounts.

Working on adding some strength to the bumper mounts and welding them to the frame. The bumper will use the original bolt holes to mount to the modified bumper brackets. I plan on adding some more gussets to run down the frame from the bottom of the mount.

And then I welded the sides back on for now. I'll cut these up as well to fit flush to the body. Then I'll have to find some new D1 rear lights.

Sorry about the instagram pictures. They kind of suck this time. I've got a lot of work to do to it. Its been kind of fun re-building it so far. I'll try to get some more done this week.

Haven't been doing much lately due to my other projects: 1977 VW Camper Bus and my 1993 RRC LWB. I finally decided to break out the welder tonight and finish some work up on my rear bumper. I converted this TJM D1 bumper to work on my Disco 2. I just need to add some lights and jerry can holders and it will be finished.

Also burned the crap out of my arm. Chicks dig scars, right?

Thanks. Still trying to decide if I should cut the rear fenders to match up with the bumper. Anyone ever done that? How does it look?
