My Journey

Great photos, yes Alstrom Point is incredible. Muley Point is as well but can be crowded. The Rescue is a great movie that came out this year. Safe travels.

I was fairly confident it was Alstrom Point. I sat up there many times in my favorite spot. It’s one of my best but when the wind is right planes pass right overhead. Real low!

The rocks really made it look like fire.

Your comment to Sierra about the adrenaline rush made me think of Alex Honnold. I don't feel he does it for the adrenaline. I think it is more of an intellectual exercise for him. I loved reading about how he approaches climbing.

Pkripper.....I had Muley Point all to myself.....only there for 24 hours but didn't see a soul. And actually, for the most post, I'm not seeing many people out there in my travels this year. There were definitely more last year (so far).....

Ace.....I know that spot but we didn't drive there. We walked several miles of the rim and I have pictures taken from right there at that spot. I can easily see why you like it & I'd doubt most people would drive that far so I'm sure you would have your privacy while camped there.....

ITTOG.....I guess I unfairly tend to see things through only my eyes more than anything else. In addition, there's nothing intellectual about me. What I spoke of there is one of the aspects of this particular trip that I sorely miss and also is what I alluded to several posts ago. It's probably why I say disparaging comments about the whole idea of overlanding. Through my eyes, there just needs to be some kind of physical & mental challenge combined with the goal.....not always, but certainly sometimes if not most times.....

Alex Honnold is in a league of his own.....he's started a movement and soon enough there will be many more of his kind.....so many talented young people are now gravitating to the sport.....

Once again I had to make the decision whether to drive north to Moab, Utah or to go spend some time along the rim of the canyon walls at Muley Point . The woman I met at the Bears Ears National Monument Visitors Center said you've got to spend at least one night up there. Well, I was close, so I once again bagged the Moab, Utah idea & drove west on Highway 95, hung a left onto Highway 261, drove south once again, got distracted by a sign, and ended up in the Jeep bound for Moon House.....

Initially Snow Flat Road was not a bad one.....that changed after just a few miles.....

It was a bit over eight miles of bouncing around in that Jeep.....some of the worst roads that we've been on for a very long time.....

20211130_101653_copy_1200x2469.jpg

I recall thinking while I was driving here how I'd much prefer to walk over this stuff and eventually that's just we did.....

We parked the Jeep at what appeared to be the trailhead and then hiked from there, down a single lane sandy road, which was in way better condition than what we had just drove.....

20211130_115643_copy_1200x583.jpg

After a short hike of less than two miles we arrived at the canyons rim.....

Amazing views were had from the canyons rim.....

We followed the trail across massive rock slabs and were constantly on the lookout for stone cairns.....

Things were actually going quite well until we got to this point.....I think it was maybe a fifteen foot drop off.....more than me & two dogs were capable of.....there would be no exploration of Moon House for us.....

20211130_111138_copy_1200x2469.jpg

Onwards we go.....

Eventually we moved on.....we continued south along the highway and utilizing our newly acquired map.....it took us to the Lower Butler Wash.....

We had finally arrived at Cedar Mesa and the Bears Ears National Monument.....

A place we were so close to, yet knew nothing about. Marked that for a future trip to Utah. Somewhere on my phone are maps.

I got two weeks behind. Your pictures are amazing. I hope we can get back there someday. We will see. As always love the dog photos.

tgil.....yea, looking back I'm thinking that was possibly my favorite ruin.....

JD.....thanks....just like last winter, I'm having trouble leaving southeast Utah once again.....it's way too cold here right now.....but then I just love it here so much.....

Now I kept thinking about what that woman at the Bears Ears National Monument Visitors Center had said about the sunrises & sunsets at Muley Point and here I was parked at a trailhead surrounded by fifteen foot tall cedars where I couldn't see much beyond the tips of my toes and I was watching the evening sky developing and the next thing I knew we were back on the road.....it was a short drive from here to there.....

20211201_074851_copy_1200x363.jpg

Heck.....I didn't even bother to get a campsite.....we had the entire place to ourselves so we spent the night parked right in that roadway.....

We left those wonderful views behind early that next day.....

.....as we made a retun to the Valley of the Gods.....we headed down the Mogi Dugway.....

20211130_155632_copy_1600x778.jpg

I had no plans to stay even one night at the Valley of the Gods this year.....

Nothing had really changed here except for one glaring thing that I'm noticing almost everywhere that I go.....nobody was here this year.....not a single camper seen during our brief visit.....
