My Journey

The month of August in 2025 was a hot and dry one in southwest Montana.....the days were long and that relentless sunshine soaked up what little moisture was in the ground. My neighbor that would tend to my 200 Norway Spruce and my well over 300 Quaking Aspens in the past had moved away in July.....it was difficult to leave the property behind.....

I think it was towards the end of the month that I finally couldn't take it any longer so I drenched every tree.....damn near pumped the well dry.....and we finally hit the road again. We drove east on the interstate and we came to the all so familiar exit for Highway 191, we left the interstate behind, passed through Big Timber, Montana and continued driving north.....and it felt soooo good.....soooo right.....to finally be back on the road again.....

There's something soooo right with travel.....cruising down that highway.....all the windows down.....blue skies.....slight summer breezes.....certainly a day to be grateful for all that life offers.....

Our first stop on that first day of our travels was at the Buffalo ranch.....

Here we simply pulled onto the shoulder of the highway and left the truck behind and walked along the rusty old barbed wire fence line.....

I wonder if I could ever tire of marveling at a herd of Buffalos.....there's just something so special about the herds of Buffalo and the wonderful wide open spaces of Montana.....

Our stop here was probably all too brief.....but our goal for Day One on the road was to get to yet another all too familiar spot and walk where there was no highway noise.....where there was no traffic at all.....

And so it was that we continued north along lonely Highway 191.....anxiously anticipating that first night of blissful sleep in our well used.....and some would might even say abused.....Northern Lite truck camper.....

The windmills.....

I love the windmills......now I'm not saying that I want to see windmills everywhere that I go.....but a windmill farm here and there.....well, they don't bother me one bit.....which is surprising to me cause I, for the most part, hate most man made things constructed in the wilderness.....

We parked the rig in the exact same spot that we always park when camping under these massive blades of the windmills.....

Then we headed out to walk the long gravel road that disects the windmill farm.....

The windmills swooshed in the wind.....and some.....maybe not so well maintained.....creaked and it was a creak that was actually like music to my ears. In addition, the tall grass swayed.....maybe I heard that too....and songbirds.....for sure I heard....sitting along the barb wire fence singing their songbird songs.....

We walked that evening and we walked that night.....it's really.....our favorite thing to do. And here it's just so easy.....flat gravel roads that seem to go no where forever. That night was a great nights' sleep.....not that I actually remember that exact night.....its been awhile.....but I do know that I've never had a bad night here.....
