JD.....amazing place.....
tgil.....yea, I miss Yukon so much.....
At this point in our travels we needed to make a decision as to where we would travel next.....north to Hanksville, Utah or south towards Arizona and the Navajo Nation. The temporary highway sign was flashing something like "Ferry Closed" so north to Hanksville, Utah was not an option as there was no way to cross the Colorado River.....we drove south.....

Now there are an inordinate number of signs along this highway warning about the forthcoming steep grade. There are signs stating oversize vehicles prohibited, RVs not recommended, and on and on. And I mean there were so many warnings that I actually pulled over and gave thought to turning back. But in the end I said what the hell and off we went.....

Almost immediately the highway bends to the left and takes a nose dive.....an 11 % grade.....
![20201114_101104_copy_1600x2844.jpg 20201114_101104_copy_1600x2844.jpg](https://expeditionportal.com/forum/data/attachments/529/529824-06091d793be8bf5762dd77ebd7ebe03e.jpg)
And then the highway narrows.....and you descend through multiple switchbacks.....
![20201114_100909_copy_1600x2844.jpg 20201114_100909_copy_1600x2844.jpg](https://expeditionportal.com/forum/data/attachments/529/529825-5eb1dc4cad7dfd88690c93581033f846.jpg)
This "dangerous" stretch of highway is three miles in length and drops approximately 1,200' from the cedar filled mesa to a vast wide open desert floor below.....
![20201114_102224_copy_1600x900.jpg 20201114_102224_copy_1600x900.jpg](https://expeditionportal.com/forum/data/attachments/529/529826-23fdbdaffcedcb24c53eb0f74e8c2483.jpg)
In a country such as Bolivia or Nepal, this section of roadway would be considered normal highway....
![20201114_102318_copy_1600x2844.jpg 20201114_102318_copy_1600x2844.jpg](https://expeditionportal.com/forum/data/attachments/529/529829-cc91c1f435e1c64cda4c38e65913b47b.jpg)
We had no issues with the descent and I struggled to understand all the hype.....

At the base of the steep grade we encountered the signpost for the entrance to the Valley of the Gods.....
![20201114_103127_copy_1600x900.jpg 20201114_103127_copy_1600x900.jpg](https://expeditionportal.com/forum/data/attachments/529/529838-0cf45032faa1039cfc5f5a79e4922c01.jpg)
We took the turn to the left and this truly magnificent wonderland would become our home for the next eight days and seven nights.....
