You should just push the t-case lever up to 4Hlc, then put the gear selector in Neutral, then push straight downward on the t-case lever and you'll feel it depress, then push upward to 4L, then shift back to Drive and go. Engage the rear locker (if needed) at this point before you set off. This is true low, the L mode on the tranny just holds it in 1st gear, doesn't change the t-case ratio from 1:1 to 2:1 like 4L does.
