After a somewhat frantic buying experience, I am now the proud owner of a 1999 Toyota 4runner. Auto. 3.4l, in desert tan or whatever they call it (the dealer called it "beige" )

Tires are BFG KOs in pretty good condition:

So far I really like it. I do have some questions though:

As with any 10 year old vehicle with 117k on it, it's got some "issues." One of them is the drivers side mirror, which has a broken glass. I can get a new piece of glass but how difficult is it to install?

Second question, the automatic-retracting antenna doesn't work, but it tries to (and makes a horrible noise when doing so.) I'd like to replace it with a basic fixed antenna, is this fairly easy to do?

It's also got an aftermarket stereo, which is nice, but I may eventually want to replace it with the factory double DIN unit that has the cassette deck (hey, call me old fashioned!)

Anyway, I'm more or less laid up at home with a broken jaw so I'm not getting much opportunity to drive it around but that should come with time. Looking forward to doing some mild mods and some extensive 'wheeling with this. I can already "feel" both the shorter length (nice!) and the somewhat higher ride, so I think it's going to be a good vehicle for me.

You can use the fixed antenna from a tacoma... Works great and looks OEM... I have one in my garage waiting for a free afternoon

Nice new (old) truck mate. Cna't wait to see it get built up. And yes, I'm jealous of your locker...

Cheers

Congrats! Looks really clean and in good shape. Keep us posted on the progress and repairs. It sounds like the antenna motor is dying. I can't imagine that an OEM 4-Runner or Taco antenna would be that expensive.

Hey, I agree with CYi5, that looks more like silver or grey, but whatever you want to call it, the 4Runner looks great.

I'd start with a nice sea foam clean out then do a tune up. Then start building to whatever you want to use it for. I just got a '96 with the e-locker and that's what i'm starting with. Then maybe some beefier skids and a skid for the coveted e-locker, rock sliders, sonoran steel suspension upgrade..............

That's not old, just getting broke in. The problems you reference are all common and easy fixes. For the radio check out a local salvage yard you should be able to get a factory radio for less then $40.

I agree, it looks silver in the photo.

Nice find. Great to have a factory locker!

What did you have before that makes this noticeably shorter? A crew-cab Tacoma?

Woo hoo!! :wings: Congrats, looks nice! I have the factory double din with the cd/cassette and I'm planning on putting in our stock FJ radio that is just sitting around....when we get it switched out I'd be happy to send you the old one if you like!

If he passes that up I'd love that double din, mine just has a tape deck :(
That is if it will fit in the 96?
