My tin-foil-hat theory is the price of diesel in the US is a last ditch effort by the oil companies to prevent the Americans from figuring out that diesel is a good idea.

Good luck and thank you.

I had a lot of fun in Southeast AZ. That place was a lot of fun when I was there.

Some excellent off-road areas and history there - too bad most of it is being baked in the oven right now. Though I remember when it snowed in Sierra Vista.

Jealous of the opportunity to be down in SE AZ. I went through as a Lt in the late 90's and absolutely loved the high desert. Had some great fun wheeling the mountains near the base; that was back in my toyota days and wish I could get back to do it in my Rover. Sadly not much opportunity for Marines so I have to make the best of where you can get from NoVA.

So I went to put my CT expedition rack on the 6.2 the other day... got it up there and...******, it doesn't fit at all! LOL

I didn't realize the roof rails had to come out. Is there a good way versus a bad way to do this?

Some people are saying the easiest way is to cut little squares out of the headliner and unbolt from there, then re-glue the headliner in. I'm a little hesitant to do this because my headliner is brand new...

loosen all the trim on one side, and you can get up behind the headliner to loosen the nuts. Some folks cut the rails, but I prefer the aforementioned route- takes an hour or so.
How's it going?

This leaves 4 holes in your roof- you'll need the following:

http://www.steelerubber.com/
part 35-0517-45
1947 Cadillac - plug, access hole rocker panel pad
You will need 4, but I ordered two extra.

Fill the holes with premium silicone first.

Thanks guys.

Doin' well Dale, haven't had much time lately to play with the trucks or bike, unfortunately.

Dendy -- total personality makeover! You even deleted the Discos from your signature! Yikes! You gonna sell the white camel or what?

Front two roof rail bolts came out pretty easy.

The rear two?

Well, passenger side is easy. Just pop out the alpine window panels and reach up in there.

Driver's side? Same thing ....IF YOU DON'T HAVE REAR AIR CONDITIONING

If you do? Like me?

But I got the roof rack on and man, it looks sweet.

Wolf wheels with 235/70 Duratracs are next. Then it's back into the motor -- I have the new radiator in and I reconstructed the battery box. Still haven't figured out the electric fan issue, sigh. Haven't found a set that are skinny enough to clear the main pulley on the 6.2.

After that axles and TC are getting flushed and freshened up, then it's HD axles. At some point I'm going to soundproof the doors and interior a little.

Freed up some space in the motor bay for electric fan set up. That last little bracket (OE radiator support bracket I believe) on the bottom is getting sliced out tomorrow -- my new radiator will ride on rubber mounts that sit on the crossmember. No re-location of oil cooler required. I think I've gained about an inch of clearance -- which expands my options for electric fans dramatically.

Also got a nice piece of Columbia Overland kit that's going in tomorrow.

Also -- any thoughts on hood louvers? Like these? Anyone had success? Ambient heat on diesels is pretty significant so even if it sucked out a few degrees F it'd be worth the investment.

What I don't understand is how the insulation pad under the hood is dealt with. Mine is a good 2.5" thick or so. I feel like you'd have to cut out quite a large hole to let the louver work properly.

I've got them on my 4.0, having pulled the whole hood from my previous 4.6 Disco that died (cam lobe wear issue/top end lubrication; totally unrelated to louvers).

Soundproofing pad on the hood will have to go to make it effective unless yours is pristine and even then you will be working around how to keep it in place after cutting massive holes in it. It will make the ride a bit louder, or at least it did in my petrol truck(s). All of that is relative of course given the exhaust, or the lack of soundproofing under my carpets right now.

Here's a couple of streetside shots since I haven't taken many this fall for some reason, at least not head on:

Sorry for the iphone quality and lighting, and ignore the half finished solenoid relocation/eventual mesh grill and such-she's a work in progress.

Overall I like them-with the hood blackout they don't stand out that much and the certainly seem to move heat out of underneath the hood (especially when you're not moving or after you shut down). Water ingress is something that people may raise as an issue but I haven't found it to be of any significance (and I have a lot more electronics to worry about than you would with your diesel). Simply put if you wheel anywhere with water your engine gets plenty of exposure that way from underneath, with the louvers pointed backwards facing up hill and raised off the hood the vast, vast majority of water runs right past it all.

Hope that helps give a first hand perspective.
