This is awesome, My first truck was a GMC Suburban with a 6.2, wont ever forget the sound. I've been looking at doing a swap with my disco, and was curious on if it would fit between the wheels, and i'm glad to see that it does.

a couple things, propane injection benefits milage and power - and you can run it all the time.

and screw the turbo, go with a supercharger - get a whipple or one from bulletcars.com

Is that highway, in town or combined?

Combined 19.5 mpg over the last 1300 miles or so. That's without any adjustment of driving style -- I'm on the gas pretty good most of the time.

I'm way on the low end of mpgs for this motor, apparently. Been talking to the maintenance guys over at our Echo company (ground maint.) and they have lots of different ideas and tips about injection pump rebuilding. Apparently you can turn the fuel waaay down and basically neuter the motor --- getting mpg to 26-28 mpg but cutting the power in half or so. That might be fine for the mall-crawling I'm basically stuck doing for the time being.

Gotta figure out this squeal first though. It's driving me nuts. It's definitely not the belt, and the pulley bearings look fine, too.

Weird thing is, my Merc 240D has the EXACT SAME squeal -- and it's also definitely not the belts or pulles. It's also coming from in/around the alternator. Makes me wonder if it's an environmental thing. Humidity?

Could it be the brushes inside the alternator??

So weird.

Could definitely be the alternator. Most likely you're looking at a pulley bearing on something. Take a stethoscope, piece of tubing, or even long screwdriver held to your ear and try to isolate the source of the sound.

High teens, low 20s.

First maintenance issue has come up -- the alternator has developed a nasty squeak. I'm probably going to replace it with a mean green high-amp.

That alternator has about 3000 miles on it, but as we discussed, you'd probably do better with a Mean Green unit. Especially with your plans for additional power drawing goodies. Also, as with my CUCV 6.2, it would squeal (even with new belts) if I gave it gas immediately after start-up. The volt meter is handy in that you can watch the battery voltage climb to normal (high green range) after a few seconds and the belts won't squeal - ever - while driving. The possibility is that you just need a new belt - that the current belt is glazed and is finding it difficult to get that battery voltage up to the 'green'. Ask your motor pool types if that is normal. Sure seems to be in my experience.

Nice! Thanks for the link.

Cheap motors/parts was a big part of the reason I went after this truck -- I'm kind of a novice mechanic, so it's important that my limited free time be spent wrenching and not searching for parts.

No problem, glad I could help . I would love to say that my motives were completely alturistic but I am looking at a similar swap for my 96 SD. The 3.9 currently serving is getting long in the tooth and I would really like to have a plan for when it decides to head south.

I have looked into the 300ti and mercedes OM617(5?) swaps but this one looks to be the most "doable".

Any further insight after more miles?

Any consensus on the milage of this thing? 18-24mpg doesn't sound that great. I hear more like 24-30 even up to 40 with the 300tdi? I don't know what's realistic, what's exaggerated, what's imperial gallons or British gallons...

Just here...
300tdi will deliver better mileage but thats because it is a 2.5 4 cyl that is very dependent upon the turbo for power. This is a huge motor that makes good power right away rather than having to wait for the turbo to spool up. 20 mpg is not that bad considering what a similar V8 would cost. Its also a legal swap in the States whereas the 300tdi is not.

I am averaging 18 mpg city with a heavy foot.

Highway it'll get 20/22 mpg depending on speed.

Motor has no issues currently; replaced a v-belt because it ate one... but otherwise it's been totally reliable. It's my daily driver.
