My nuts sheared off

You don't need to drain the diff just pull the axles and the bearing retainer comes out the same as the fronts with the same tool. I would replace the seal.

Do I need a specialized tool for that or can I get away with a gear puller?

Roger on the seal.

You could, there's not much torque involved. Fuso wants you to measure the tangential force on the bearing with a spring but i can't imagine that any one does.

Thanks I have a pretty proven method for field torquing wheel bearings (as taught by Bill Burke). :)
