Need another truck. Which to get?

I'm not discounting the auto. In fact, the other three 3.4L's have all been autos and performed flawlessly. Current 100 is also auto. Nothing against autos. Just wanting a change of pace.

You can still find some of the 5 speed/3.4 Tundra access cabs out there but they are rarer than the proverbial hen's teeth. Most of the ones I've seen were owned by anal retentive old men who really know how to take care of their stuff. There was an awesome one a few months ago on KSL.com down in St. George. 5 speed manual. Stick transfer case. Roll up windows. Nice camper shell. Low miles. Flawless condition. Owned by an old retired guy who didn't trust those new fangled automatics and thought the V-8 would waste too much fuel!

Which is why I think I'll end up with a Tacoma. But I'll keep an eye out for those T100/Tundras.

How about a TRD Tacoma with a 2.7? I've got everything you're looking for and I love the truck. It hauls my bikes, takes me anywhere I want and is dead reliable.

2.7L TRD is hard to find. But not only that, I feel the 3.4 is just as reliable and only gets 1-2 MPG less. On a second vehicle (err, third, I guess), that doesn't matter. Plus, the V6 will tow/haul a lot better. I appreciate the thought though.

I'd second the Nissan. At least give them a look. Similar capabilities without paying the "Toyota Tax." ;)

Also, the first gen Frontier short bed crew cabs were available with a manual tranny, unlike the Toyotas.

Nissan makes good trucks. But I'm somewhat of a Toyota-elitist? Fanboy? Whatever the term is. Father in law has a manual Xterra and it's been a good rig for him. But for whatever reason, I liked driving my Tacoma more. Just personal preference. :)

Also, I'd like a 6 ft bed in addition to the manual transmission. Which the Frontier double cab also comes with a 5footer. Also, I believe no rear locker option until the 2nd gen?

You are on the right track IMO. I think the extra cab Tacoma with the V6 and manual is probably the best platform to start with for both cost to aquire, availability of parts, durability, and utility.
I love my 03' Doublecab, but I miss the extra bed space and a manual.
