Need help with Tire Size

So I'm looking to get some new tires for my 2008 Tacoma and I'm having a hard time deciding what tire size I should go with. I have the 2.7L 4 cyl. and I don't want to have to regear. I am torn between getting 235/85/R16s and 265/75/R16's. I've read a lot about the different sizes and I'm at a toss up.

Does anyone have any input as to how I should go on this? I am trying to avoid losing too much power and gas mileage.

265's do to massive amounts of choices and it sounds like you don't need an E rated tire and most will be an E in the 235.

Also they should be a lot cheaper....

33" are good before re-gearing. Anything above would need 4.56 gears.

Well, I thought the 235's were going to be better for MPG, but they're not that noticeable compared to 265/75's. I still dropped about 1-2MPG. The main reason to go with 235's is the cheaper cost. Got my BFG KO's for $600 out the door. Ride isn't harsh at all. Actually, pretty comparable to stock. Just keep the PSI to 30-32.

so is there any real benefit to go either way on the tires or are they just that close in comparison that is won't matter all that much?

I ran 265's on my taco 4cyl and had no issues with power - a great place to find them is the FJ Cruiser forums as its the stock size for that vehicle and they are always upsizing to 285's and selling the 265's cheap. Just pay attention to the rim size, the FJ's came with both 16" and 17" rims, but both with 265's. Here was mine with my TRD takeoffs and 265's

I didn't have a 4 cyl but I did like the 235/85/16's I had on my Taco. When my current 265/75/16s wear out I'll likely move up to 235/85s. I like a tall skinny tire.

Both tires are right around 32" in diameter which has been a good size for me. Both will also deflect (spread out) when aired down, the difference being that the 265s will deflect more to the side, whereas the stiffer, skinnier 235 will deflect front and rear.

I've 'wheeled both sizes in the mountains and they've worked great. The 235/85s also worked very well in the red rock deserts of Utah's Canyonlands National Park.

I am having a hard time finding the 265/75/16 in anything other than an E rated, haven't looked into the 235/85. I like the tall skinny's too, but am concerned about how effectively they deflate for sand traction, etc.
