Need Paint Ideas

I sold my beloved FJ60 and am putting the money into my 1994 Dodge with the 12 valve. It's a regular cab long box and am going to get it painted. It's black but the has the typical dodge clear coat issues.

Should I stay with black or do something else? I love olive drab! What do y'all think? Give me some ideas please

Olive drab all the way! Or...expo white, which may be problematic with your base color. :sombrero:

The next question is if I change paint color would you guys just go with a flatbed because it would reduce the paint cost quite a bit if they just did the cab which would leave me some cash for the flatbed or would you just paint the pickup bed that's on it?

My plan is to definately do a front end replacement bumper with a receiver hitch for a winch, this way I could use the winch in the front or in the rear.

I am glad you kept the Dodge! My personal thoughts are:

1. Black is the wrong color for where you live. Olive drab is ok. If you want any resale value maybe do a black and silver combo. You could do the silver up top and cool things off a bit. I always like white, but unless you do a complete job ie; in door jambs and underhood, it looks cheap. With the black/silver idea you don't need to do that.

2. Unless you really NEED a flatbed, I would keep the factory bed. You can do a drawer system for gear, rifles etc and with a cap, put in a thermarest and sleep there too.

3. Multi-mount winches are a great tool. My 94 Dodge came with the mount and warn power lead up front. Too bad the po kept the winch I always figured if I get a multi mount, I will fab a reciever mount in the box of the truck so the winch can be secured out of the weather and out of sight. Obviously you might want to look at beefing up the frontend and suspension a bit for the weight of the bumper. At least with a multi you can put the 100 lb winch out back.

Cheaper the better. I made the mistake once of painting an off road truck in a very nice gloss black...never used the truck because I was both afraid of getting it dirty, and scratched. Whatever color you choose, make sure it comes out of a rattle can.

And please, no graphic wraps!

I think gray or green would look good if you're not going to repaint the jambs and the engine compartment. I like the idea of silver and black, but I wouldn't want even part of an expo vehicle to be black. I owned a black truck once, never again.

I'm getting my Suburban repainted white next week at a shop called Econopaint. The name says it all. I was going to DIY, but for $450 they will remove all the trim, prep, prime, spray a base coat and a clear coat. For the same price, Maaco would just spray a single stage enamel. As long as they don't get overspray all over everything, I'll be happy. I could care less about runs and orange peel. I just need the UV and rust protection.

One thing to add, I do like the idea of truck bed coating on the lower part of the truck and around the fenders for a long term durablity perspective. Just one of the many things on the list for my truck.

I couldn't agree more on the cheap and durable. My F150 was in a front end collision, and the old guy that repaired couldn't see very well - runs and orange peel all over the place. Perfect for me because it looks good from 10' away, and I don't worry about taking it through brush or getting it dirty.

I'm getting a little body work done and the paint job for $1800. It's a black truck with a tan interior. I'm thinking about just a black repaint with either silver or tan line-x or something similar along the bottom. I hate black but it is what it is. The only other option would be to go olive drab with black line-x across the bottom and then black out the grill and line-x the headache rack, side rails and bumpers.

I'm definately going to do it, just want to make sure I get it right!

If you don't plan any border crossings I like the OD and black Line-X combo.

I'll see if I can get a pic of my buddys 05 Nissan Frontier tomorrow. It's the factory medium green with bedliner along the bottom and around the wheelwells, it looks really good.
