Need shocks, should I just get a lift kit?

I know there's multiple threads on lifts and shocks, but I am confused about coils. I need shocks like corn needs the rain. Its becoming a safety issue throwing my truck around when I hit a bump on a curve. I shouldn't be drifting on the freeway bridge with BFG's KO2's!!!

Heres what I need to know:

1) Am I cheating myself not buying a lift kit opposed to only shocks?

2) Are there any coils in the wrecking yard (different make/model) that will fit my ride? Example Suburban or Expedition?

3) Whats the best mixture of everything out there? Dobinsons/Bilstein? OME/Bilstein? Dobinsons/OME? Full OME kit? Full Dobinsons kit?

Thanks in advance for my lazy searching, little freaked out I almost hit a K-Rail at 60 with my son in the car.

Also my money is a little funny, trying to get the best bang per buck. I hate buying cheap crap only to find I need to get the good stuff a week later.

Help a BROTHA out!

Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.
If the coils are the original set from the factory, then I'd suggest including coils in your suspension refresh.
Currently I'm running OME struts/coils on the front and OME coils with Bilstein B6 4600 shocks in the rear.
No complaints.

The pics I've seen for a lift involves 4 coils and 4 shocks. Are the struts/coils you are talking about the same?

The front uses struts not shocks. But you will need 4 coils, the front and back are different.

I just replaced the shocks and struts with bilstein and it was worlds improved. I still need to do the coils, but you know, money...

Yes money...so just Bilstein shocks was enough? How do I order them today if I want coils next month? Is there a special part number or length?

You should give some thought to how you intend to use the rig... is it a daily driver, what kind of off highway use will the vehicle see, how much gear do you project will be carried, etc.
This will help you decide on the part numbers (load capacity) to purchase. The valving of the struts and shocks should be mated to the spring rate of the coils.

Mostly its a daily driver. Not even long commutes, just down the road a few miles to take the kids to and from school. Some weekends, a few fire roads, but I plan on using it more on trails when everything is ready. My jeep buddies keep inviting me to Anza-Borrego. So its a slow build. Eventually I want it ready to tackle the Rubicon. A winch bumper and RTT are in the plans.

No a whole lot of help but my truck feels the same I have shocks and springs from ome sitting in my garage that I need to get put on the truck. I went with the smallest lift and honestly I'm not sure what springs I have but I'll report back once I get them in. I emailed the guys at adventure driving design and they help me figure out what I needed. Also I think bilstiens are pretty hard to get at the moment.

Ok sounds good. What I like about OME is they only give you 2 options. Heavy or medium duty. I shopped for a long time finding a lift for my XJ. Bought it, never installed, sold it with the Jeep.

Why didn't you ever put the lift on, installing a lift on an XJ is so simple.

Since you plan on wheeling it harder and harder as the years progress, I'd suggest the HD OME kit.
If you're worried about blowing the seals out on the rear shocks, then put in the Bilstien B6 4600.

Cheers

OK so OME HD kit is plenty fine? If I do run Bilstien shocks, just buy OME HD coils?
